Some 1965-1972 Chevelle 12 bolt Rearend Differences.....

The 1968-72 rearend is 1-inch wider overall [each axle is 9/16" longer], than the 1965-67 rearends..
According to: [Chevrolet by the numbers 1965-69]-[Chevrolet by the numbers 1970-75].......
1968-72 Chevelle [55 1/4"] axle tube flange, to axle tube flange...axle shaft length [30 1/8"]..
1965-67 Chevelle [54 1/4"] axle tube flange, to axle tube flange...axle shaft length [29 9/16"]....

Total width 1964-67 chevelle rearend is 60".......Total width 1968-72 chevelle rearend is 61"...
........Axle length on 1964-67 is 29-9/16"...................Axle length on 1968-72 is 30-1/8".....

And the "housing date code"....[L 4 9] = Dec.4,1969 on this particular rearend........ Looks like this....

Thank you I been having trouble feeling like a red headed step child getting answers.
I know I can ask some stupid questions but I am trying to to do it rite.
I think I will leave it in there It has stock corvette 8 inch rallys and 225x70 tires with no problems I had no idea THis was not the short one.
I have a another housing which is short I found it in a 69 nova after they welded pads on it for leaf springs It will take some work but It can be fixed Apparently the short ones are very desirable I am sure glad I bought this one for a extra I will have to revise to put it back inthe car not sure what difference it would make? I have not been called out on it yet??
