Im about to put my oil filter adapter on (the thing that you screw the oil filter onto when you change the oil) and i wanted to know... do i need to put any sort of sealant down first? or do i just put it on dry?

thanks
540 RAT Apr 2nd, 07, 7:50 PM NO, NO, NO do not use sealer, that would be a recipe for disaster. The last thing you need is a chunk of sealer coming loose and plugging something up. What exactly would you be trying to accomplish by doing that? If there was some minute seepage, it is all inside the lubrication system so it doesn't matter. If you are using the GM part, and presumably others, there is a very small ridge going around the part, that will mash against the block, sealing the adapter to the block pretty well. Just make sure your bolts aren't too long. If they are, then the bolts would bottom out, leaving the adapter loose to whatever degree. With the correct bolt length, just tighten it up and forget it. You've got bigger fish to fry.
Hunter11 Apr 2nd, 07, 8:13 PM Is this a adapter to go from a cartridge type oil filter to the newer modern screw on type? You will have to excuse my ignorance I am new to this older car stuff. I would like to change mine out on the Chevelle to a screw on type filter. Any suggestions where I can find something like this online? Thanks
jks67SS396 Apr 2nd, 07, 8:32 PM how long should the bolts be? mine were a little long (got one in a junkyard) and i put washers under them. the adapter is fairly tight...
Keith, this is an adapter that mounts right to the block. it allows you to use the screw on type. its not a conversion for the canister type like was found on my 67 camaro (and probably your 67 chevelle)
Hunter11 Apr 2nd, 07, 8:47 PM Jeff, that is what I am looking for. The Chevelle does have a canister filter. Where did you get yours? I am going to start searching online to see if I can find one.
jks67SS396 Apr 2nd, 07, 8:56 PM i went to pink n pull (junkyard). just about any small block or big block from 68-85 i think will share this part. get it from a chevy, as buicks and pontiacs and caddys have a different style. i paid 7 bucks for mine. new, they are 30.
its too damn bad that i didnt get an extra one or i would have sent it to you. let me know if you dont find one and next time im down there, i can get one for you...
btw, i found the correct length bolts.

The part he has is not what you need. You need the oem oil filter bypass for the canister filter. Then you use the Wix adapter kit with it. This is one I just bought on E-bay for a customer:

Jeff,
The bolts should not need a washer. if they are the correct ones they have a smaller head than normal so you can use a socket to tighten them. They should use a 7/16 socket.
jks67SS396 Apr 2nd, 07, 10:43 PM Bill,
the bolts i have are 13 mm heads. my buddy pulled one for himself yesterday too and his came with 7/16th bolts. well, i had both sets of bolts in my pocket so i tried both today. i noticed that my 13 mm bolts are a little shorter than his 7/16th bolts... so maybe his adapter is a little bit taller than mine.
think im ok with my 13 mm bolts and matching adapter?
thanks Bill

Jeff,
It is not the bolt length, the Dart block is not tapped deep enough so you need shorter bolts than stock.
Every one I have done is this way.
You don't want washers here, some filters will hit the bolts if you space them out.
jks67SS396 Apr 3rd, 07, 1:32 AM hey mike,
well, how do i know for sure? my bolts dont feel bottomed out andthe adapter feels snug.... do you happen to know the length of the ones you use?
thanks

Not offhand but all you need to do is screw the bolt hand tight into the hole without the adapter & measure the underhead distance compared to the thickness of the adapter.
You can use the stock 7/16" head bolts by grinding them shorter if they are too long.
