TimC Oct 1st, 02, 12:36 AM Thanks for posting the link.
I've been looking for different examples of rotisseries that can be affordably built at home. The one they're calling the Bottoms Up Jr. is what I have in mind. In fact, it looks alot like the plans I found here:
http://members.tripod.com/~mopar_roadster/body_rotisserie.html
Coincidence or a little reverse engineering?

TimC Oct 2nd, 02, 12:36 PM Well, building a body rotisserie appears to be easier said than done. I have been trying to get the tube stock that the plans in the above post indicate and it has been tougher than I thought. It seems that telescoping tube is pretty expensive. American Steel and Tubing near my house wants almost a hundred bucks for four feet of telescoping round tube http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif They don't have, nor can they get (they claim) telescoping square tube. The lady said she could sell me some tube but there was no guarantee it would telescope.
Anyone have any ideas on where I can get some stock in the San Gabriel Valley area? Anyone want to build one of these too? Maybe we can pool our resources and save some money in the process? Otherwise, I may just go around to some fabrication shops and see if I can pilfer through their remant stack. Any opinions on this?

I figured MartinSR would get the juices flowing on this subject over here on Chevelles.com.
My two cents:
You can buy 2" and 2 1/2" square tubing steel and run welding beads on each side of the inner tubing to take-up the sloppiness. I put two beads on each side of the inner post, so that the beads don't interfere with the adjustment holes. I highly suggest anyone to make and install temporary door opening braces too on a convertible!
Here is a link to my Camaro rotisserie over on camaros.net on how I bought two engine hoists from Harbor Freight for sacrificial material. You will have to scroll down the post 3/4 of the way to see the pictures:
http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum3/HTML/002845.html
I've added some stabilizing straps that came in the original engine hoist kits between the fixed stands and the rotating square tubing members to keep the whole unit from flexing, which I attach during board sanding only. The pictures in the link do not show these extra straps attached though. One of these days I will update my pictures and include center-of-gravity dimensions for my Camaro buddies when I get the time.

John D Oct 2nd, 02, 11:56 PM I build some custom CCTV rooftop mounts for my company from time to time, using 2 thru 3 inch 1/4 wall seamless tubing. Last shopping trip I had an assortment of sizes totaling about 45 feet. Cost me about $75. Look around for a different steel yard. The place near me charges .50 a cut (precision bandsaw), and the same for bending flat stock.

70Z15 Oct 3rd, 02, 8:25 AM I've been thinking about building one lately. I am looking to copy the bottoms up jr. at www.accessiblesystems.com. (http://www.accessiblesystems.com.) If you scroll through their pictures, they actually show all the pieces for the jr. It looks like there are 3 different sizes of square tubing. Anybody have a guess on wall thicknesses?

here is a low buck "build it yourself" page (http://www.mgbexperience.com/rotator/)I made and put up for my Corvair enthusiast friend a few years ago
I can't remember what magazine I copied it from

Welding a bead on the inner pieces to snug 'em up got me thinking. I may try to find some square tubing that fits relatively loosely and then weld some cold rolled flatbar to the inner piece. Seems like I could get a smoother surface this way. The cold rolled stuff is pretty cheap to boot.
I'll post some pics with sources and prices once I get this going. I think I'll try to round up some stock this weekend (gotta get moving on this before the wet season sets in...that is if we have one this year. Only got about four inches of rain last year).

67ss Oct 3rd, 02, 10:15 PM I just built one but havent used it yet.It cost me with extra tubing left over about $175,that is with the shop I work at giving me some small parts.I made mine with bearings to rotate instead of it rotating like an engine stand.I can get a list of sizes together if you like.I forgot about the hydraulic jacks I bought to raise it up,add about $100 to that.I cant wait to use it.

Just went down to metal supply house on my lunch-hour. They have everything I need and will cut and label everything for $200. Now thats more like it! After all is said and done I'll prolly have about $250 in it. I told 'em to go ahead and cut the pieces. Should be welding 'em up next weekend.
I don't think I would ever have attempted this madness if it wasn't for Chevelles.com http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks to all.

YenkoChevelle69 Oct 4th, 02, 6:59 PM I suggest you guys go to Prostreetcar.com, and look at that fellas home made rott... He is the person who wrote up the tremec 5 speed install for his 69 velle. His Set up looks real nice.

Gary Dec 12th, 02, 8:21 PM If anyone is interested, I had found the same info that Dean posted and actually created AutoCAD drawings of all of the component pieces shown on that website, with an assembled view. I also modified some of the dimensions so that it fits a Chevelle body.
I haven't built it yet, but it looks like it will be real close.
Send me an E-mail and I'll send you a copy.

bhawk Dec 13th, 02, 4:48 PM I built one out of square tubing after I looked carefully at the accessible systems picture. I did not use the true telescopic square tubing as it is too expensive. They call it "trailer hitch tubing" here. But the squares i bought fit sufficiently snug one inside the other. It works great. No need for bearings on the rotator part. round pipe inside another round pipe, like an engine stand works very fine. Can spin the body around with one hand once you find the correct height of the front and back stands. They have to be adjustable, because each body is different and the hookup will vary in height from front of car to rear of car. I think I made mine heavier than need be. If someone wants me to look, I could find the bills and get exact sizes of the square tubing. I did not put wheels on mine, and I think I might add that at some time. But for my application, the tubing on the ground works just fine.
72sselcamino Dec 13th, 02, 6:32 PM Gary, I'd like a set of your plans. I tried to email you but it said the address was no good. Cal

customperformance Dec 13th, 02, 10:01 PM If any of you that surround iowa plan to come thru anytime in the near future i have built rottiseries before and have made two different versions. One version is adjustable in heigth and the mount bar is 2"x3/8 angle . The adjustable piece is 2 1/2 square over 2" both were 3/16 wall. A forum member on here has one (chvyl71) I can provide a ph # if interested.. Also i have right now a version of the hydraulic assisted bottoms up accessible set if anyones interested. I can send pics if interested. I wont ship them due to the fact its too much hassle for me to do so cause i am not a volume shipper with a shipping company on large items. I do have a friend who is a fulltime swapmeeter who travels Iowa Illinois Wisconsin Missouri Nebraska in the summer and may or might be willing to deliver.

I like the way you can balance the car with it, so it will stay in any position. It's also super sturdy!
