I have a 64 Chevelle with air and 4 speed. I have a complete MSD ignition setup for the 327. There are two wires coming from the ignition box - one is a orange wire that goes to + side of coil and the other is a black wire that goes to negative side of coil. MSD says these are the only wires that are supposed to be connected to the coil.

There is also two wires on the stock wire harness that go to the + side of the coil - one of the wires goes to the starter and the other goes back to the ignition switch. These two wire get real hot when the switch is turned on. I took the wires off the + side of coil but no help.

Should I also disconnect this wire on the stock harness that goes to the starter? Or is there a short back in the under dash harness somewhere?

Those wires go on the small red ignition wire(key on power), of the ignition box.

Yes, there is a red wire from the MSD ignition box that goes back to the ignition key. But my question is on the stock harness.

Should the wire that goes to the starter (black with purple stripe) be disconnected from the starter.

Yes the only wires that go on the coil is the orange and black one from the ignition box. The wire from the starter is like a temporary 12 volt while cranking to give the old ignition enough power to start. The wire that originally went to your coil is only like 9 volts . Its a resistance wire GM used for points ignition. It should be ok to trigger your ignition box on and off. I used a ignition wire from my fuse box on my Chevelle. If you do that make sure it has power while cranking. Some feeds from your fuse box may have power while the ignition is on but nothing during cranking.
