: Frame nooks and crannies

After sandblasting my '69 frame and coating it with POR 15 Silver I still have some nooks and crannies (pits) in the frame. I was considering using body filler to clean them up. Has anyone done this or is there an easy way to end up with a smooth frame? Any tips?

You probably should have done any filler work before you put the por 15 on. I dont know anything about that stuff if you can coat over it or not. Sombody else here should though. Depending on how big the pits are we will either prime and sand them out or use a glaze to fill them. For serious pitting we will use a product called duraglass.

Micky-Thanks for your reply. I called the POR 15 guys and they said it is OK to put filler over the paint and then paint again. Some of the pits are pretty bad. Is Duraglass a fiber glass body filler? Is it more durable than normal body filler? Finally, how is it to work with?

Duraglass is a fibre type bondo that is very durable. We use it for deep pitting, or after panel replacement as a first layer. You can go with kromate(sp?) light for med to light stuff or just a icing for very light. The duralass is tuff to sand so be very neat with it. The other stuff sands easy. Be sure to prime a couple coats after the bondo work to get rid of sand scratches.

One last question. Above you mentioned primer and sanding. Is there any specific primer that you recommend? I went down to look at it again and some of it is not that bad. Maybe I could get away with priming it in some areas. Again, thank you for the replies.

I use PPG products. If it were bare I use Ncp 271 which is a self etching very thick and nasty smelling primer, but fills heavy stuff wonderful. For med to light ncp250, no smell works great. A couple coats of this will do the trick, you will probably have to do this once then sand with 180, prime again go with 320, than a red scotch bright pad. Should be ready to shoot or por15.

I just read through this thread and thought that I would add a comment. Whatever primer's etc... (besides the POR-15) I would very strongly suggest that you stick to ONE manufacturer. I would talk to whoever will be painting the car and find out what product lines they use. Stick to that product line because mixing things up can / will cause weird results and side effects. Even within brand specific such as PPG, Dupont etc... there are different families of product meant to be total solutions that work together.

Have you considered POR's putty to fill the pits? I've heard it's pretty good stuff.

I thought of it, but did not know too much about it. Do you know anyone who has used it? Do you know if it come in tubes only? I guess I should call POR to find out.
