A couple weeks ago I met a guy at PaintersLane (do it your self shop) that is restoring a 72 chevelle that has been in his family for years, His name is John (dont know his last name). I talked to him for a while and learned that he has been on this sight many times I dont know if he posts here or just reads. but any way, I stopped by the shop a few days ago to check on his progress and offer a hand if needed. The owner of the shop informed that John had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He is starting chemo and will be unable to finish his dream car. Several of the members at the shop are making arrangments to finish the car for him. We are all meeting tomorrow for a block sanding party I hope we can finish it to his liking. Ive only met him the one time but he seems Like a really nice guy. I hope and pray that everything works out for him and he recovers fully.

You should Start a post in Cruise Inn's, with OHIO in the title. I know that if I new about it, and was close, I'd be there.

That's awfully cool of all of you all to do.

Carl, the owner of the shop, Thinks it is close to paint ready and is hoping we can have it ready for paint today. If I remember correctly It is being sprayed Cortez silver and black. Im not sure what engine is going in it, I think there planning on putting the original 307 back in it but im not sure. I should no more today, Im just a participant and haven't been givin all the info yet. Ill take some picts so you can follow the progress. Thanks for all encouragment im sure when john sees this it will help him to not that every one is praying for him

John came by to thank every one, Like I said before I barely know him but he seems to be doing well. As before he is an incredibly nice guy and well deserving of everything that is being done. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

We're going back down on tuesday to block it again. John had ordered new inner front fenders, front end bolt kit, stripe kit that should be in tomorrow, We plan on shooting the inners, radiator support and firewall tomorrow. body should be in a paint friday. Then its color sand buff and assemble. I have some picts from sunday morning before we started but forgot to take any as we went along. Were can I post them to get a link here?

edit: also found out that this was his grandmothers car, it has been in their family since it was new. He and his wife are bringing her down to see the progress. kinda neat

Set up a PayPal site or whatever. Let's get Buddy's car built. I'm in for some dough. Think about it. A dollar from everyone on here...gotta be $5000. He's worth it. Let's get this going.

We wish the best for him and his family. I think I have a floor shift column and two front pieces of drip rail trim. I had the entire drip rail but it has been promised to a forum member. Does he need any other window trim? Maybe you could make a compiled list and post it here. I am in for something to help.

this is the list That john provided us of his plans for the car, i f anyone can get us a deal on any of the parts it would be appreciated. I dont believe we are going to complete the car 100% as john is planning on working on it during his recovery over the next year and a half. Due to medical bills he can not afford alot of the parts he was planning on installing. He is trying to decided wether to have the original 307 rebuilt or buying a 350. I have been in contact with a few machine shops locally trying to help him out but hav'nt had any cometments (sp?) yet. but any way, heres the list

• front disc brake conversion (purchased complete kit and completed to the point till I get 18" rims)
• 18" rims - still need to buy
• rear disc brake conversion - need to buy but will do later down the road (run front disc / rear drum till then)
• full suspension upgrade - I have the total vehicle package from Hotchkis, front is installed except for sway bar, rear needs to be installed (upper / lower control arms, springs, shocks and sway bar).
• convert from front bench seat to bucket - haven't bought anything for this yet other than my new floor pan was prepped for buckets
• install center console and convert from column to console shifter - need to buy but would do further down the road
• convert to SS dash - don't have but would do further down the road
• new carpet and head liner - don't have yet
• gas tank - clean inside and coat / paint outside with silver POR15 (I have the silver POR15 but not the cleaner and sealer for inside yet)
• reinstall original glass trim
• reinstall original glass
• new fender trim - need to buy
• new drip rail covers - need to buy
• bumpers - reuse originals, maybe rechrome if needed (I have both)

Thanks again for all the support.

Aside from being geographically undesireable and having a bad back , I sure would be glad to keep the coffee pot going! Or make beer runs. I can do that all night cause I don't drink. :)

Forget the beer runs and stick with coffee. Beer and good body work don't mix well over time. :D

what do you mean by a "new" engine? i've got a 350 that i pulled out of my Chevelle that I won't be re-using. I know i'm a heckuva long ways off and i don't know how it would get shipped, but as far as i'm concerned, he might have more use for it than i will.

The engine ran when i pulled it out... it might need some freshening up, but it should still run. it's got a holley street avenger carb, edelbrock intake, i don't know if the internals are beefed up or not... new spark plug wires (not pictured)

I just recieved an email from John's sister and thought I would share it with all of you

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Ken,

My sister sent me the link for the chevelle forum and I am overwhelmed by the selflessness and good will of everyone. It is impossible to express in words how wonderful it is for all these people to help someone who they don't really know.

I am John's older sister who lives in Germany. As I am 12 years old than John, so I remember when the Chevelle was bought and driven by our grandmother back in the 70's. All of our family watched it sit in the garage over the years being weighed down by other things piled on top of it. I knew that my brother's dream was to pull it out from it's buried position in the garage (I am not allowed to say 'junk' out of respect for our deceased grandfather......but that word pretty much fits), and restore it. This wasn't an easy job for my brother as our grandfather had dismantled pieces of the car and "stored them in different places" of his property. Again I won't say "hide parts of the car", because Alzheimer's disease affects people in different ways. After our grandfather passed away, our grandmother decided to sell the house and move to Mount Vernon where my Uncle and Cousin live. It was practically the hardest 'easter egg hunt' for my brother to find the missing parts of the car as the house was slowly emptied of it's contents. He was so excited when it became a reality that he would be able to make his dream come true......to restore the car. You need to understand that in the Shemenski family, it seems to be an inherited trait to build and retain old things. Maybe I should say that it is a trait from the men......the women don't really understand it, but we accept it. Anyway, the car stunk to high heaven when it was 'freed' from the garage and I couldn't believe that my brother wanted to have it.....let alone restore it. But his eyes would light up when he talked about the car and it was easy to see that it was a great passion for him.......a dream he wanted to come true.

My brother is one of the very best people I know. Not only because he's my brother, but because he is a genuinely good guy. I know that no one "deserves" to have a brain tumor, but it is hard for us to accept that someone like him should be punished with one. He never spent a second thinking about being sick or imagined that his life would change and be any different in the future. Needles to say that the diagnosis hit him and his wife, as well as our whole family, very hard. The hardest things to lose through an illness is a passion.......like his passion for the Chevelle. In the next 18 months, John is going to have a tough time with his treatments and hope is what will keep him going. Our family is fairly large and very supportive, but it is something totally different when other people, out of the goodness of their hearts, give up their time and money to give him back something he thought was lost. All of the people at painters lane have provided him with great hope and motivation through their kindness and support .......this is truly the greatest gift of all.

We are all praying hard for my brother and are very hopeful and optimistic that he will fully recover and lead a long life which is full of things that are yet to come. God bless you all........what you've done is truly a "man made miracle".

Please pass my heartfelt thanks to the people at painters lane.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline Hanser

It wont fit in the small one. all the seam sealing is done, were going to coat the floor, and paint the fire wall over the next day or 2. then shoot the rest of the car. Were still rounding up parts, the owner of the shop is trying to organize a benifit swap meet to raise some money. hopefully it works out.

Ken, I'm located in Xenia, Ohio, about an hour northeast of Fairfield. I must apologize that I have no personal-labor time available to offer at this point in the middle of my super-busy season. However, I am directly involved with the companies that manufacture and sell the collector car products and supplies you'll need, and I can definitely get you some help on free products and/or discounts. For example, I do all the marketing for POR-15 products.

I may also be able to help in another way. I am the promoter of your area's largest swap meet & car show, coming up in about 30 days in Springfield, Ohio (Cars & Parts Swap Meet). If you are not familiar with this event, you can check it out at www.ohioswapmeet.com. We'll have about 35,000 people come through our gates in less than 30 days from now, and if John's car will be transportable by May 25th, I would be glad to let you put it on display in the center of the show, where John's car and his story can be shared with thousands of car lovers. I might even be able to produce some signs to go with it to read: "Thanks to the following people..." or banners, etc. The event is yours to work with, if you think it would be of any help. Maybe John and his family would enjoy seeing it on public display? (Even if it is "in progress?") That will have to be your decision, after asking John.
Also, if any of the Team Chevelle guys and gals that have worked on this project want to come to this event, just PM me, and I'll make it happen. You could all have an area together if you wish.
I am really impressed with what you guys are doing for this Chevelle guy and his family.
Also let me know what parts and supplies you need most at this immediate time, and I will help where I can. I can also connect this project with the car magazines, as I deal with them every day as a part of my business. ------Jim W

Well that truly is a boost that this project needs. I think lilump may be the shot in the arm thats needed to complete this project and help it along the way. Count me in for a donation on my next pay packet. If you need any parts then repost a list of the most urgent things needed and an address to send them to and I will also see what I can round up.

If you are not familiar with this event, you can check it out at www.ohioswapmeet.com (http://www.ohioswapmeet.com).

Ken,
To follow up: I have had a recent situation in my own family which, believe it or not, also involved both a vintage Chevelle and a brain tumor. I'll keep that situation private for now, if you don't mind. But I do feel a very close kinship to this project.

My list of clients includes American Autowire, POR-15, Trim Parts, PST (Performance Suspension Technology), Metro Moulded Rubber, Obsolete Chevy Parts, Kanter Auto Products, and several others who would not fit this car project (Ford suppliers, truck guys, etc). So I can easily ask these people for help. Beyond my own list of clients, however, I am also close friends with the management of many other companies, such as A&M SoffSeal, PUI, Northeast Chevelle, Eaton Detroit Spring, CARS, Year One, Classic Industries, Rick's Camaros, and others. Some will be able to help more than others. I doubt that I can get them to give you everything free, but I'll bet that we can knock a big hole in the total cost.

My one weakness is time itself. This is the peak season for my swap meet series, and for all of my clients. So please be patient with me. You'll need to be the "point man", who puts the real time in this project, as I simply cannot offer much time, unfortunately.

Send me a PM with your most urgent needs first, and let me see how much help I can be. And if you want to bring this car to my event, or just John and his family (plus other Team Chevelle folks who work on this project) please let me know that as soon as possible. I'll need all the advance notice I can get, so I can start trying to scrounge up some space. We sold over 4000 vendor spaces for last spring, and we had 986 registered cars for sale. We expect to grow again if the weather cooperates, and we must try to cram all that into this 126-acre facility. It's tough to make room, but we'll get it done if we have enough advance warning. -----Lilump

Okay, another update. I now have firm commitments from both Primedia (the people who publish HOT ROD, CAR CRAFT, SUPER CHEVY, etc) and Trader Publishing (OLD CAR TRADER and CORVETTE CHEVY TRADER) to provide editorial coverage of this project, and of the products which are supplied to it. This will be a BIG help in getting parts. :hurray: Also, I have firm commitments so far from A&M SoffSeal to provide the rubber, and POR-15 to provide all frame and chassis paint, and similar products. More later, as responses come in.

By the way, what is the address for this shop? A&M SoffSeal is located near this area too, and the general manager there would like to come by and help. I'll come too, but not until next week. There will be more....

Hey guys, John here! Sorry I haven't responded sooner, just joined the team today. First of all, THANK YOU! You guys will never know how much this means to me but hopefully you all will know that my wife and I deeply appreciate all the support, prayers, camaraderie, good wishes, donations, and time sacrificed. My recent change in health has definately been the toughest thing I've ever experienced but the members of Painter's Lane and Team Chevelle have truly lifted my spirits. I am amazed by the support and generosity of so many that I have never met and will most likey never meet. While the treatments are really starting to take a toll on me physically, mentally I couldn't be better. As all of you can relate, I have a passion for cars. There are dozens of cars I would like to drive or own at some point in time but this Chevelle has been a childhood dream. Its been in the family from day one and I've always dreamed of restoring and keeping it in the family. Its hard to say what if or what could have happend, but with everyones help, I don't have to do that with the Chevelle. My dream is just as strong today as the day I started the restoration. And aside from the car, the support you all have shown has taken what could have had a negative impact on my faith and hope and made it a positive life impact. Thank you everyone! - John

I e-mailed this morning and confirmed funds were still needed. I sent in my $25 via paypal per the instructions above.

Time to pony up guys. If this were you instead of John, you'd appreciate the help.

Also, regional clubs might want to consider this as a Chevelle related worthwhile "investment".

So were making a push to get the body in paint before the show, If any of the local guys want to swing by and help, Nows the time. Hopefully by the end of the week we will have the firewall/cowl, Trunk, interior areas masked and sprayed black. When thats done, The whole car is getting a coat of Primer sealer -- Sanded with 600 and into the booth for some color. Let me Know if anyone can swing by, Theres a lot to do and not much time. John stopped by the shop saturday, He is estatic about the recent developmets (He registered and posted on this thread a few posts back, Johnnyski, in case any one missed it). If everything goes as planned He and his family will be able to join us at the swap meet.

That's great news, Ken. I have talked by phone with two more industry professionals, and they plan to help. I wish I had some labor hours to offer you, but the month of May is more than overwhelming for me. Yet hopefully the kind of help that I CAN offer will make up for this lack of time. Remember when you are working on that list of needed parts to start out with ONLY the items that you need first. You don't need to turn that list into a giant, all-inclusive list. That can be a massive job, and you're bound to forget something. Just list a few items at a time, and send it through. It will be best if we only need to ask for a few pieces at once anyway. There is no sense in requesting upholstery products now, for example, if you are weeks or months away from needing them. You can also list used items if reproductions are not available. I'll do my best, and I am confident in the fine people of the restoration industry who will support my efforts.

Sorry it took so long to repsond, I just sent an email about the por 15, and a few questions. I did not make it into the shop tonight, I will be in tomorrow as soon as I get off work and will post an update. Then plan is to roll the car out and wash/prep it. then spray the firewall/cowl. And if all the powder coating is complete, reassemble the radiator support.

Jim, I'm glad everything is going well with the show prep! I hope your trip went well. Carl sent an email to ralph with some graphics and head counts yesterday. We've been trudging along on the car, it was supposed to be in the booth tuesday and didn't make it due to another members project running into probs while spraying, it went in the booth wednesday but during the final prep Carl found a spot that didn't feel right so out it cam with out paint. Hopefully it will be back in tonight if all goes well. then we can start re-assembly. I've sent a couple emails about parts, If you have time please let me know whats coming and eta so we can plan the next 2 weeks. I may have located a complete dash and harness locally, Im going to take a look this afternoon to see if its what we need.

Ken,
As I said in my pm earlier to you today, if those stencils give you too much trouble, don't rush the job. :noway: I'll get Ralph G of Stencils & Stripes Unltd to help you through it. There are more than one manufacturer of stencils, and in my opinion, there are sometimes differing levels of quality. Ralph really knows this stuff, and he has some stuff that you use to keep the stencil moving around nicely until you are ready to have it set up. Same is true for decals. So, whenever you run into troubles with any of these aftermarket resto products, get with me. I usually know who-makes-what, and who to go to when you REALLY need help.

Glad to see this project is in your's and Carl's hands. You guys are great. ----Lilump:thumbsup:

Keep up the great work

Thats John Jacobs in yellow, Jason Frazer in black, Me in grey. There was some problems with the stripes, they bled under the tape really bad. Jason manged to fix most of it with some skillfull use of a razor blade, 1500 sandpaper, Fine Line and an airbrush. They will probably come off after the show and be redone. Im positive the trunk lid will be redone, and about 50% on the hood. Watch tomorrow we will be assembling the car, at 9:00am there will be a 69 velle in for paint. I dont know who it is or anything about just that it will be there. Any one local that wants to come by tomorrow and say Hi or lend a hand is more then welcome.

Well, after 11 hours of work, we have the trunk lid fit, both doors on (only 1 adjusted properly), radiator support in, both fenders and wheel houses on, Hood on but not adjusted. the hood is really fighting us, we cant get the gaps close enough to even shut it all the way. tommorrow we're going to pull the hood off and set it on with out the hinges to see what adjustements we need to make in the fenders to get it to work. it looks really good , the paint is unbelievables ( still needs color sanded). there was a slight mishap with the air hose in the booth after the last coat of clear went on that left alot of dust in the top coat of clear, hopefully it will sand out. but other than that it looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim-- The por 15 arrived friday along with the roof rail rubber from trim parts, we just opened the boxes this morning -- thank you!!

Dave and John from Tristate chevelles stopped by and gave us a hand for a while, Thanks guys I know you really didn't have time and I really appreciate it.

Thanks again to everyone

It was nice to meet you Ken. That sure is gonna be one heck of a nice car when it's done. I dig that place (Painter's Lane) it's a shame it isn't a little closer to home. At this point it looks like I'll be able to swing by Tuesday afternoon for 3 or 4 hours. Are you gonna have the dash by then? I do have a few tricks for the hood. Are you having problems getting it flush in the rear or getting a proper, even gap on both sides? Later

Ken, That's great news. Glad to hear the POR-15 and Trim Parts rubber arrived okay. I look forward to seeing you and the Chevelle and all the gang at the event this week. And after this swap meet is over (as soon as my life returns to semi-normal again :p), I'll get to work ordering more products for this terrific project.

In the meantime, one of my hard-core Chevelle buddies is definitely coming to the swap meet, and I'll introduce him to you. As far as I know, he is one of the most knowledgeable judges for authenticity for LS-6 and other big block Chevelles anywhere. He is coming to enjoy the swap meet, but then he wants to examine my LS-6 project car. He and I will spend Monday after the swap meet going over my car, verifying original parts and such before any restoration work gets started. His name is Jeff, and you're sure to like him.

See ya there! :hurray: ---------Lilump (Jim W)

Ken,
Just a quick reminder to you and all the gang coming to the swap meet this weekend: I'll try to meet everyone as they arrrive, when possible. But do keep in mind that we get so much incoming traffic on Saturday morning that I and my entire crew will be waving flags and directing traffic frantically. However, at about 1pm the show is at its peak, but it begins to sort of run itself for a while. Then I'll have plenty of time to come visit with the whole gang. See ya there! --------Lilump

Jim,

Thats great, I look forward to meeting Both you and Jeff. We're really looking forward to the show, I Think the car might be a little nervous about it as its fighting us Like a 15 year old boy!!

Dave,
The prolems were having with the hood is that there is not enough of a gap at the winshield end, it wants to hit against the fender as soon as you touch the nose. It looks like something funny is going on with the lip on the side of the hood (like it might have got tweaked at some point). We're going to set it on with out the hinges to try and see whats going on. We were all too tired to do it tonight. maybe tomorrow. Tuesday would be great, I usually get in about 4:30 or so and am usually the first one there to work on the chevelle. I wont have that dash by then, I dont have time to go get it and Im not sure what is involved in getting it out. I might try to cut out of work early tuesday to see what it will require to remove it from the donor car.

Well Im heading to bed, Good night

He is much more expierenced then us!! He walked around and lokked for a few minutes, then it seemed like a few seconds of twisting turning etc and Bam everything just popped in to place. Now everything fits very nice!:hurray: :hurray: :hurray:

Carl is going to start color sanding and buffing tomorrow, we started putting on window felts (trim parts sent them) today, but didn't get real far.

The springfield swap meet was absolutly unbelievable, I met so many people I cant begin to name them, Its all a blurr of faces and names. Jims entire crew treated us Like royalty for the entire weekend. I cant say thank you enough to Jim, Tommy, Ralph, and Pat. John, His sisters, Grandma, and some cousins came by on sunday for a few hours. John, as usual was, was in amazement. This was the first time he'd seen the car out in the sun. Carl did an excellent job with the paint, This thing looks amazing. While John was There guys from Trim parts stopped by and invited us to bring the car to there show on July 17th. They said ESPN will be there for a tv show. John, as are the rest of us, is really excited.
Several companys stopped by and offered there assistance. Ill get some info up on them a little later this evening. Here are some picts from the show

You guys did a great thing. I got the post from friends of John's family, who live near Wheeling WV. They are excited about what you all did for John. Just wondering how the project is coming along and wanted to report that from the picture I saw here, John seems to be coming along well - still a long way to go, but improving.

Ken,
I was honored to meet you and Carl and the other Chevelle guys (and ALL the car guys and gals) at this event. The sweat and tears you guys have put into this project humbles me and my crew. And of course I was deeply moved to meet John himself and his lovely wife. When his grandmother was thanking us all on Sunday, I had to leave before I might get all worked up. I am really proud of this, and I will pray every day for John's full recovery.

I must apologize that I could not spend more time with you there, and many of my staff members expressed disappointment that they did not have time to come over individually and meet the members of the Shemenski project. :( We were simply swamped with the large spectator turnout.

When I introduced you to Dave Roberts of The Right Stuff Detailing at the show, I knew he would help you with brake and fuel lines. But I was delighted to hear him offer you everything from his entire product line, including disc brake conversion. He is a good man.

There will be more; MUCH more support from the industry. But as I advised you at the show, we'll take only a few parts at a time, to keep the project moving smoothly.

It's getting late, and this will be a tough week for me, so I'll post again soon. ----Lilump

Jim,

John and his entire family are just amazing, His Grandma seems to have that effect on a lot of us. Dave and Pat from the Right Stuff Detailing are really great guys. Pat came by just as John was starting to wear out and really cheared him up. Pat made a list of all the lines, hoses, valves, booster and master cylinder. But in the confusion, We forgot the rear brakes themselves. We discussed it but never made a decision. I think everyone was in a bit of a rush to get home. If you get time would you mind shooting him an email? The guys at Coker Tire were amazing also, In addition to trying to get the tires done, They lent us the cart and a hand several times packing up. I wanted to stop by and thank them again but they left before I had the chance. We took monday off, and trieed to start up on the car last night but didn't make much progress. I did finally get a chance to Read the paper work that came with the Harness Qwick Wire donated. I think Its going to work out just fine. Were trying to decided what to do next, The Joke was " All we have left to do is everything". I think were going to finish color sanding next, Then finish coating the Floors with the POR 15. Then will see were we're at!!

The reception by everyone at the show was just unbelievable. When I took a Little time to go shopping, People would see the shirt and ask about Johns Progress, The project, or how they could help. John is really excited about the Trim Parts show. Hopefully by then we will have made some serious progress .

I have to leave for work, Thank you to You and all of your crew that made the Show such a wonderfull expierence for John and the rest of us.

Jim,

The Brake, fuel, trans lines, Booster and master cylinder arrived from The Right Stuff Detailing yesterday. These parts are beautifull!!!!!!!! We're considering pulling the body back off the frame to coat everything with POR 15 and install the lines properly. Havn't decided for sure if will do that or do it with the body yet. Shouldn't be to hard to pop it apart and would probably be the best way to go. We'll see tomorrow

No worries about those rear brakes that you need. When you're ready for them, they will be there. And there is a lot more where all that came from. This is a wonderful hobby, and it is supported by a wonderful industry. Hang in there, and don't hesitate to call me if you encounter any major problems. Jim,
We're ready for the rear brakes at anytime, wether its parts to rebuild the drums or a disc conversion is completely up to you and Dave. Either way would be great. Im also putting together a list of parts we will bee needing to complete the exterior (chrome, molding etc). Do you happen to have a connection to get the bumpers rechromed that won't cost us a fortune? The local places all want $600-700 to re chrome. I know your busy, just let me know when you get time. Ken...I kind of figured that the body would come off. Did you leave the doghouse on? We did my buddy's 69 and just took off the hood but left the doghouse on. As nice as the rest of the car is it only makes sense to make the frame just as nice. Let me know about the trans (THM350) and which direction that is headed. Just couldn't get it all sorted out. I talked to John about it, He is planning on driving the car to the show next year. Hopefully I will be able to accompany him with mine. I'll let you know about the trans as soon as I can, were kind of waiting to see what happens with an engine before we get into it. Subject: Great news to share......John's progress

Hello friends and family!

I am excited to share some wonderful news with you all. As most of you know, John completed his 7 weeks of radiation in combo with chemo (pills) a few weeks ago. It was a long 7 weeks, but he made it through with no major troubles. Today, he had his follow up MRI scan and doctor appointment to verify his response to the aggressive 7 weeks of treatment. Well, between his continuous positive thinking and the love and prayers from all of you, I am extremely happy and relieved to say that the tumor dramatically responded to it. Putting it in the words of the doc, “better than I expected” and “one of the best results I have ever seen” (and this doc has been in practice for over 20 years). He showed us side by side comparisons of the MRI from 3 months ago and the MRI from this morning. The older one showed 7 cm of a prominent gray mass. The one from today showed almost NOTHING. The doctor explained that most of the viable tumor cells were gone. Any few remaining decreased from a Grade III to a Grade II (huge difference in the scale of tumors). He also said that he is very optimistic about John’s long term future. Let me just shout………Woohoo and thanks to the Lord above!!!!

With all that said, John does have to continue with treatment and surveillance since there may be a few active cells left that may not have been detected by the MRI. He will be on the chemo pills (Temodar) for 18 months, but only taking 5 days per month. In the doc’s experience, he has had best success with treating for 18months, and there are no side effects to taking the chemo that long. He will continue to get MRIs frequently to observe as well.

John has no restrictions, except scuba diving and lifting greater than 120 pounds due to the pressure they have on the brain. Both are bummers for him, but nothing he can’t cope with. He’ll just have to learn to enjoy snorkeling and smaller muscles. ;)

He is finally driving again (another woohoo for me and his coworkers who picked him up every day for work) and back to good ol John. And without a doubt, he’ll be back to restoring his Chevelle in no time. J

Just want to truly, truly, extend my thanks to you! He/we could not have gotten through any of this without the support, love, and prayers from amazing family and friends. We owe so much to you and hope that some day we can return the goodness.

Thanks again and much love.

Hope to see you soon.

John and Lisa

We spent a few hours the other day lining the body up on the frame and tightening the body mounts I had a blast!!! We are all determined more than ever to see this threw to its completion. Hopefully, it will be done by the middle of july-- Thats the plan, We'll see how it goes

Johns Health is improving dramatically, His last MRI showed a large reduction in the size of the tumor, Theres more details on the previous page of this thread, He has improved greatly and has been cleared to return to work and work on the car also. The car is moving along slowly, We pulled the body off the frame to coat it in POR 15 and install new fuel and brake lines, we finished that last wednesday. A reporter for the Cincinnati enquirer came in last wednesday and interviewed John and carl for a story that ran on saturday. Just found out that a reporter for another paper is coming in tomorrow for another story. If I can find them online Ill post links, I know there here somewhere just cant find them. TC members have really kept this thing moving along, So far weve collected about $1300 that has all gone to the project, The majority of that has been from Team chevelle memebers. So you guys are really making it possible for us to do this Hopefully someday we will find a way to show you how much your support means to John, his family, the painters lane guys and myself. Jim (lilump), and Dave (bowtie70ss) Have been absolutely wonderfull in procuring parts and assistance installing them. Hopefully we will complete the car in the early part of july, i cant wait to see John drive it out of the shop. :beers::beers:to you all for your continued support and prayers

Its been a really long week, Work has been insane, Home has been in turmoil- We did maanage to get the gas tank coated with POR 15 and sealed inside with POR 15 sealer, worked great. My wife and I went in saturday and coated the floor and trunk with POR 15 also. Next week will finish polishing and installing the trim/rubber we have. Ill get some new picts up over the next few days.

Last night John, James and I started installing the rest of the Trim Parts rubber and moldings that we h ave. Had to stop due to a mishap that required some touch up to the paint (I had an OOPS). Its really looking good. John Jacobs worked on cleaning up the Dash that classix donated. Its a bit faded and will need painted. Does any one have any recomendations on paint for the plastic parts ? I'm thinking a semi flat black or satin black would work ok but not sure. Another John (seems like everyone in the shop is named John but me) touched up my oops tonight cant even see it :hurray:. May be tomorrow we can finish installing the last bit of piece of window trim then we can start installing the glass. I know I keep saying Ill get picts up, just havn't had time. Ill try to get some up tomorrow

SEM brand Landau Black is the correct color and sheen. Kentucky Motors and Smyth both carry it.

UPDATE-----------

Over the past few days, we have finished the color sanding and buffing, The car looks great!!!!!! We finished installing the roof rail molding and weather strip. Also finshed installing the brake lines for the front brakes and installing the master cylinder and proportioning valve. My sons and I spent the day today polishing the window trim and masking the turnsignal and headlight trim to repaint the black portions. We're making progress, Not as fast as I'd like but its coming along. We've hit a wall, unfortunatly we're out of parts to install. The Trim Parts car show is a week from tuesday, Hopefully between now and then we will get the glass installed and maybe the door panels. John is doing well and continuing to recover. He has been able to spend several days over the past couple weeks working on the car. He seems to really enjoy it and is anxious to be able to drive it soon. Hopefully we'll be able to fullfill his wish and dreams soon

Thanks again to everyone!!!!!!

Definately use the SEM Landau black paint for the dash. It's perfect

Just remember to kind of fog it on lightly so that you don't fill in the grain design in the plastic.

I also used a Krylon silver leafing pen to paint the lips of the gauges (available at most craft/hobby stores - inexpensive too). Came out looking great! Practice on the rims of a few clean peanut butter jars first. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Just don't try to go back and touch any spots up while it's wet. If you must, wait until it's dry.

Keep up the great work :beers: :hurray: :beers:

I finished cleaning up the dash and painted it with SEM landau black as everyone suggested. Looked really good while it was wet, but as it dried it looked a little splotchy. Hopefully its just from the humidity and will even out as it dries. Also discovered that the window trim is going to need a lot more polishing. If everything goes as planned we will start installing glass tomorrow.

UPDATE -- John has been a bit under the weather lately and has not been able to come in to the shop this week. He's been really rundown and tired, The doctors say its normal and nothing to worry about.

We've spent the past few days finalizing the plans for the trim parts Car show next tuesday. Tomorrow we start the last minute thrash to finish everything up. The front end sheetmetal has been bollted back on and aligned (still needs some tweeking but its almost there). Hopefully tomorrow we can finish installng the side glass. Im going to try and get the marker lights and headlights back in the front also, but the screws are missing- any one know what size screw holds the marker lights in so I can pick some up? We were hoping to have the new dash in before the show, but I don't think thats going to happen, theres too many other things to get done at this time.

the thrash to get ready for the trim parts show is over, in the past 3 days we finished installing the door and quarter glass, cleaned prepped and painted the grill, fron marker light trim and head light trim. installed all of the above parts and the rear marker lights. Had planned on posting some picts, but forgot the camera, Carls is emailing some that he took I should have them up tomorrow. Tomorrow its cleanup time then load the car on the trailer so we can get to Trim Parts early tuesday morning. John is spending the weekend sleeping and relaxing, Hopefully he will feel well enought to come to the show.

The parts arrived tuesday, Thank you again, it was exactly what we needed.

Dave-- Thanks for hanging out at the trim parts show and helping get the chevelle packed up and on the trailer. I know you needed to leave and really appreciate your help

The trim parts show went well, Unfortunatly John was unable to make it. He had doc appointments and was unable to attend. All of the trim parts crew treated as like royalty. the ESPN crew came by and did a piece on the project and car, It will be on the Mothers Car show series on espn2 some time in the next month or so. We met lots of great people and saw some really nice cars. The best part had to be the burnouts as every one was leaving!!!

Tonight, we pulled the old dash out of the car, Have to do some cleaning then we can install the new one. Should only be a few days before thats done. then the front and rear glass goes back in. Then we are officially out of parts. Here are some of the pictures I've been promising

Just a quick update: We havn't done any work on the car in a few days, We spent some time cleaning and organizing our work area and planning things out. I'm leaving on vacation to Myrtle Beach on thursday so I spent the weekend finishing some much needed maintance on the family Car. The plan right now is to make a big push over the next few weeks to finish the car. Jim (lilump) is rounding up some parts for us, Hopefully we'll be able to finishe the car in by the middle of august. We'll have to see how it goes. Im going to try to have the new dash in and wired before I leave, as long as I dont run into anything flakey it should be no problem. Then the rest of the guys can get the front and rear glass in. We're well on our way, Can't wait to see John drive it out for the first time.

spent the evening yesterday at the shop. we started assembling the dash for installation, we ran into som problems with the wiring. The harness that came with the monte dash is damaged, the plan now is to cut the connectors from it and splice to the sweep dash harness. I've read several threads that say it is simple and works well so we're going to give it try. Does anyone happen to have a writeup of wich wires get removed and wich ones to connect together so I don't have to spend hours deciphering and comparing wiring diagrams????

Aug 10th, 07, 10:25 PM
weve spent the past few days checking the dash wiring and cluster to make sure everything works, Aside from a bunch of bad light bulbs everythings is working great. Hopefully it will all be installed by the end of the weekend.

A local car collector is donating a vortec headed 350 and 700r4 trans. The engine will atleast need re-ringed. Hopefully we can come up with some performance parts to make it scoot a little better. We'll have to get the trans checked out as its been sitting awhile and come up with a mild convertor of some sort depending on the cam we end up with. Im going to check around a bit hopefully we can come up with 383 stroker kit.we'll just have to see how it unfolds over the next few weeks

thanks again for all the support

Ken, little bit of a balancing act on the cam and compression vs. the overdrive tranny. The OD will drive the RPM down at cruise, can't have a big cam that blubbers at the low RPMs. I have a 3.73 with a 200-4R , in OD the RPM is usually under 2000. Use the locking converter, that'll keep the tranny from frying in it's own oil when the cruise RPM is below the stall speed. If somebody builds the tranny for you it's a reasonable mod to install a pressure switch to lock the converter when it goes to OD.

Tom, thanks for the info I had not thought of the overdrive/lopey cam issue. Ill have to talk to John, and do some research to see what our options will be. We should have the engine and trans this weekend sometime so I should have a better Idea of where we're at in the next few days. Im hoping its an older block with provisions for a fuel pump, but dont know for sure, maybe we'll get lucky and its a roller motor (be a decent trade off for having to run an electric pump). Do you have an insight on a good combo/decent power that will not have issues with the trans?

Im not sure what the cleaner is that he used but is unbelievable. the rear seat and dash pad look brand new. The engine should be dropped of sometime saturday, John and I spent sometime talking about his Ideal engine. I think we may try to find a 383 kit, I think that would suit his needs/hopes very well. We'll have to see what happens..

Tom Mobley
Aug 17th, 07, 4:54 PM
keep in mind that 383 cubes will raise the CR some, you're better off with slightly too low CR than too high, just like you're better off with a slightly smaller cam than a too big cam and slightly smaller carb rather than a too big carb. This stuff applies to a street car or reasonable facsimile thereof. :)

Aug 18th, 07, 4:57 PM
The engine will be at the shop tomorrow, Hopefully by tomorrow evening we'll know exactly what we have. I spent the day to day cleaning the underhood wiring harness, Cleaned and painted the wiper motor and have it all ready to install. WE're going to shoot for about 9- 9.5 to 1 compression, a decent mild lopey cam (if its a roller block then definatly a roller cam, if not then a vodoo), A performer rpm intake, 650 or cfm carb, hei ignition, 1 5/8 headers and full 2 1/2 exhaust out the back. hopefully we can make it all happen, just need to round up parts and pieces.

John came in today, We installed the wiper motor and underhood wiring and tested everything. Everythhing except the wiper motor and horn work. I think the horn relay may be bad. As for the wiper motor, we didn't investigate very far Ill have to play with it later.

Glad it got there ok, we we're kind of worried about the distance. We've had a few mix ups with shipping but I think we've got them all straight now.

James and I installed the gas tank last night and worked on a few eletrical issues (horn, turnsignals, and wipers not working right). We've determined that when the car was soda blasted the excess soda caked onto the contacts (column and dash were left in the car and masked off). We have some cleaning to do before they'll work correctly. We still Have not recieved the engine yet, It was suppose to be dropped off sunday but something went wrong at the guy that donated it's buisness. Now Carl is out of town for work and we don't have a contact number to arrange a pickup or drop off, so we'll have to wait. Can anyone tell me where the ground from the sending unit is supposed to attach? I routed the wire where I thought It wass but there is no where to attach it, I guess 72 is different from My 70. Thanks Again To every one for your support, Without the Team chevelle Community this project would not be possible. All of you have really kept it alive and moving forward

I don't think we'll have room to bring the trans back from springfield, If you are in the area sunday and have time to drop it off that would be great. If not I can pick it up next week at the cruise in. Is your friend that rebuilt it a member of your Club? The wiper motor was toast!!! I pulled the cover and washer on it, all the wire connections were broken, everything metal inside had Massive amounts of crud that wont come off. It looks like it had water sitting in it for a very long time.

He rebuilds transmissions on the side. Have you contacted Superior Chevrolet or one of the larger dealers around here about a 350 4 bolt crate engine? On a side note- I believe the brakes we removed were original it didn't appear that it had ever been apart. We also installed a new steering wheel donated by Classic industries it also fits well and looks great! I'll update when I can but it may be a while

After all that happened in the last few weeks (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194978) things are starting to get back to almost normal. John and I had along talk a few days ago. He has recieved more good reports from his doctors, and is back to work full time. John has decided to take the chevelle Home and continue the work there. He said that he could not, with a clear conscious, continue excepting donated parts or money. Its this attitude that proves once again why we took on this project. He is still amazed at the support he recieved from some many people he has never met, and wants to thank you all for everything you've done. All of the support and prayers really helped him get through the bad times, kept his spirits up and helped him get to where he is now. He will continue the working on the car and hopes to have it finished sometime after the first of the year. Thanks again to everyone for helping make this all possible.

Ken

Excellent that he's doing so well. The project served it's purpose well, made huge progress. Hope you can keep in touch with him, see how it goes. He'll probably need some help along the way.

John asked if it was ok to call for help, I told him that i would be more then willing to help anytime he needs it. He has been travling for work, and he and his wife were planning a few short trips, so I havn't spoken to him in a couple weeks. I plann on checking in with him early next week to see how things are going. our last conversation he had set a goal of being done shortly after christmas. If all goes well he is planning on having it at chevellebration next year. Ill keep updating as more progress is made
