Just got back from the exhaust shop opened the hood to check things out and noticed the air cleaner nut was missing, lid was still on top. The problem is when i took the cleaner off i saw @ first i thought was gas figured running a little rich but as i am cleaning i noticed that it was oil, what could be wrong. 454 with only about 3,000 miles... any help or ideas were this is comming from would be appricated. did you see smoke from the exhaust or something liquid on top of the engine?

thanks Tom

No smoke and car ran fine, like i said when first opening the hood and saw no nut holding the cleaner lid was just going to put another nut on, the oil was on the side of carb and the gasket @ the base of the cleaner was wet is were must of the oil was. Cleaned everything up and restarted the car and seemed fine, just puzzled were the heck the oil came from, i was running hard for about 45 min. non stop, if overfilled with oil could that be the problem? kevin

you mean it came up out of the breather hose that goes from the right valve cover to the air filter housing? is that a little closer to what you were trying to say?

I think I have read on here that the big blocks sometimes pulled a little oil up through the valve cover.

That makes sense because there was a little oil in the carb and the rest had ran down the one side however nothing on the manifold or engine was wet, from the other post i wasn't aware the BB could pull oil from the vavle covers maybe with the air cleaner lid loose bouncing around caused this, who knows.
Anyone have any more possibilities what could of caused this don't want to do damage to the motor really runs strong blast to drive. Kevin

Aren't the baffles in the valve covers supposed to prevent oil from doing that?

Sounds like a problem I had with my 396 and that's the aluminum intake "lost" it's torque and the oil gets pulled up and some goes out the tailpipe while some will work it's way up on to the intake. Maybe that's not your issue but it's amazing how the aluminum intakes loosen up.

Are you saying that the intake may have to be re-torqued because i did change out the bolts started to rust put stainless steel bolts in maybe thats all it is, worth a shot.
