Long story short

My wife and I are having our first child in under 3 weeks.

My 69 chevelle is sitting mostly in bare metal with the body work not started.

Since I am unsure what kind of time I will have over the next few months and not wanting my car to rust up
What should I do???

I'm not sure if I should use a self etch primer on some of the bare metal spots first, than use a primer sealer and if I do would I have to strip it agian to do the body filler work???

Or is a self etch even need if I use a sealer.

I don't want to rush the body work and have to do it agian (especially since I am so slow at it) and I want it protected just in case I have to store it for a few months untill we get use to having the newborn around.

Thanks for any advice

Self etch primer does offer the best adhesion but I've used epoxy over bare steel for years with excellent results. And plastic fillers can be applied to epoxy primer. Make absolutely sure the metal surface is completely clean before you apply the primer and you won't have any problems. Bob

Bob gave you excellent advice on the primer, let me touch another subject here.

Get some epoxy primer on that car right away. Be sure you wife is FAR AWAY out buying some baby things when you do it. Be sure she is gone a LONG time like HOURS AND HOURS before so she is sure to not be exposed to anything.

Do this PRONTO, get it done and protected and out of the way.
Then for God's sake FORGET ABOUT THAT DARN CAR!

You are going to be a part of one of the most exciting times in any mans life. FORGET ABOUT THAT DARN CAR!

I would right now go out to the garage and take a sledge hammer to my half restored Gran Sport and after I was done with that I would take it to my 48 Chevy truck and then my Skylark daily driver, I would do this before even the thought of missing my childs birth or changing it's diapers or hearing the signs of my newborn child on my shoulder.

FORGET ABOUT THAT DARN CAR! For a long time, help your wife, do as much as you possibly can to let her rest and hold that child as much as you possibly can.

You are a part of one of the most wonderful times in any man and womans life. I am 45, I have two older kids 22 and 19 and then two little ones 7 and 3. I wouldn't take any amount of money for the memories of those first few days. Of the birth, seeing them pop out, my goodness, what a miracle right there in front of you. I remember how hard it was, feeding my first in the middle of the night and spilling the formula all over me and the couch. smile.gif Those were GOOD TIMES, they are precious, PLEASE don't miss out on them worrying about that car. Don't let your wife down worrying about that car and for God's sake don't let that little human being down worrying about that car.
Congratulations and God Bless the little one.
