: Do I paint the stripes or main coat first?

I am going to repaint my 70 SS soon and I need to know which came first. Were the stripes painted then the main coat or were the stripes painted on after the main coat and clearcoat? Thanks for any help.

Body first then stripes - you'll find that the stencils work much better this way.

The stripes are paint on after the body paint.

For best results and a smoother finish, after the stripes are painted on, scuff the entire hood and trunk and then clear coat it.

in response to bill t's post, you should never sand or scuff the basecoat before you clear!the sand marks will stand out like a sore thumb.if you have any dirt or imperfections, sand them out with 600-1000 wet and then recoat with basecoat then clear.

It's my understanding that next year the federal govt is going to outlaw the stripes that came on SS Chevelles. Only a solid color will be permitted.

Tom,

You can't really be serious can you? I can't hear the sarcasm in your voice because it's all being typed. There's no way they could pass tht law. Someone would have to pay the price for this outrageous idea.

If you are using a 2 stage pain ( basecoat, clearcoat) paint the stripes after you paint the basecoat and before you spray the clear. In otherwords sandwich the stripes between the basecoat and the clear.

Oh yes, and since we are on the subject of a federal law against replacing the stripes, don't forget the transmission law that has been passed that goes into effect soon. It's a new law that mandates that ALL performance type older automobiles, such as Chevelles, Camaros, Novas, etc, must replace the automatic transmission with a 4sp or equivelant HD type manual tranny such as a Richmond 5sp. Automatics will not be allowed on public streets, only on the dragstrip. Honest, that is what the law says.

All F*&D products will be exempt from this law as they do not meet the Performance specs.

What law or regulation are we talking about here? I follow politics everyday and have not heard of these things at least not on a national level and not in MD. This would be unenforcable anyway. This topic does bring up some real points you all may want to concern yourselves with:

1. Many states or locals allow "junk or clunker" confiscation. This means that even if you are restoring a car on your property away from plain view, they can take your car without notice or compensation. This is REAL.

2. Environmental restrictions may eventually make it ILLEGAL to paint a car in anything other than a "certified" paint booth.

3. Many states are allowing companies who are big polluters to purchase clunkers i.e. old cars you and I like and destroy them. Why? So the polluting company can continue to pollute. They figure if they remove the parts cars, then we will have no choice but to park our collector cars because we no longer have parts.

I know politics is not as interesting as car collecting, modifing and restoring, but these people don't give up. Remember, Al Gore is going to fight to ban all internal combustion engines. Read his book Earth in the Balance. He says it in black and white. Sorry for the off topic ranting. But since someone else brough it up, I figured it was OK.

Selko you must be new here...DZ has been trying to get the 4 speed thing passed for awhile http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif but strong lobbying from the built auto crowd (myself included) kept stall converters and shift kits legal. For awhile I figured Id have to buy them in some thugs back room!

It is hard to tell these days what could be proposed. Just trying to keep everyone informed about the true danger our hobby is in. I kinda guessed that the proposals above were just in fun. I found a soapbox for my 15 seconds of fame and now I am done.
