: Has Anyone Done This Bucket Seat Mod?

Well, I just got my buckets back from the upholstery shop. I will follow up with the story/pix in another post but I have a question to ask first...
Has anyone ever tried to modify the bucket seat "stops" mounted to the seat bottom which govern the position of the seat back? I'm 6'2" and it appears that I fit much better in these seats before the springs and foam were replaced! Now my head just about grazes the headliner! I'm wondering if I can get the seat back to recline just a bit if I modify these stops or fab a set of new, shorter ones (???)

New foams huh. Same thing happened to me. I've heard that there are differents foams available and one of them doesn't do this. I don't know which foams are the right ones to get though. Since your pretty tall you could try spacing the front seat brackets off the floor around 1/4" to tilt the bucket back and get you out of the headliner.

It could work, but IMO it's better to shim the front mounts like 67shovel suggested. This will recline the whole seat, which might be more comfortable if you have long legs. I did that in my Camaro, and it worked great.

After i had the seats in my old 69 rebuilt (with OPG foam) i had the same problem, head in the roof, and stomach in the steering wheel.

I pulled the rubber back stoppers out alltogether, and it leaned the seatbacks back about 1 full inch at the top.

I have heard that the seat foams made by American Cushion are the good ones... sold by NPD and year one i blieve.

Wow! I'm pleasantly surprised! Do you see any negative effects from this? (What stops the seat back from overextending into the back seat area??!!)

Might tear the covers faster....a shim on the front is a decent fix sometimes...safe too...

Those repop buns are a beech to install...sometimes they will stretch the cover seams in certain areas to the point of busting the seam...alot of times the buns have to be modified...I could go on and on but unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, this is all we have really...

Interesting note here...I have a kit for a 70 model car that I am going to do in the near future...this kit is one of the first ones repopped...I believe it is from the early or mid 90's...I wonder what it will all fit like??? :)

Thanks for all your help, guys. I'm going to look into it this weekend.

I would shave the back rubber stops and shim the front mounts if needed..
Your drivers seat won't be even with the pass seat unless you do the same to it..
Also, last resort, you can slightly bend the metal angled arms that rest on those rubber stops. I just evened out mine on the drivers seat as it was slightly bent and cause the seat back to lay back a little like YOU want..
I don't think you will need to as it don't take much to change the angle of the seat back..

Take the seat out and pull the seat tracks off, Redrill the holes on the seat tracks about a 1/4-1/2" farther (holes where the tracks mount to the seat)and mount them back on the seat with the new holes. The seat will only be moved a 1/4-1/2" backwards but also will be that much down(since the seat sets on an angle). Helped me alot and youll never know it was done and when the seat foam is broke back down you can mount them back to the original holes and the new holes will never be seen.

Thanks for all of your input, guys. It proves once again that there's more than one way to skin a cat! I just got finished making a set of new stoppers using some hard durometer rubber that is 1/4" thick (half the thickness of the factory stopper). It took less than 20 minutes to make and install a pair and made ALL THE DIFFERENCE! I took a shot of the driver's seat to give an idea of how much it laid the seat back. Of course I made a second pair to have the psgr. seat look the same. My head's out of the ceiling and I'm lovin' the new seats!

I am having the same problem with the 66. James Hinshaw saw it when he had the car and said it was the new buns also. I am not sure what is the best thing to do other than tear the seats back apart and have the buns modified. But I like some of the ideas I am seeing and will have to look at these options when the seats go back in it next weekend.

If they look good don't tear em down unless you absolutley have to...
