I went to the local paint supply shop today and was told that most 69 and 70 GM colors were only available in single stage enamels. I wanted to repaint my 70 it's origional Forest green, but in base/clear. They sold PPG paints, anyone know what I should do?

A GOOD paint supplier will adjust the single stage formula to the basecoat formula if they know their business. Some don't want to bother. Perhaps you could shop for another supplier if one is nearby.

Ditto Vettefella. All the old colors can be matched with base/clear.
Most all your better paint supply stores have Spectrometers, computers which reads the color and will spit out a formula in any property you wish....lacquer, base/clear, enamel, etc. PPG's version is called "Prophet".
A competent paint supplier should also have someone on staff who can take a color that is "in the ballpark" and tint it from that point to make the color you want.
DO expect to pay a fee for this type of service.
Also, most of the older colors have formulas available in base/clear in PPG's Omni brand.
Most of the color computers will also direct you to an "offset" code (a color very close to the original) which may be available in more properties as well.
Again, its just a matter of finding the right supplier to work with you.

Thanks guys, I guess I left a few things out of my post. They are a very good and helpful shop. They offered to use the prophet on my car but it has a repaint over the origional paint that is just a shade lighter. They also told me about the Omni base, but I would rather use DBU or DBC and they agreed as well. And there was a closest color on the computer - 1982 Renault Dark green poly. They even mixed me a pint to color test it for ten bucks, so they did all they could. I just figured that there would be base clear paint even for all the older colors. Well, I'm actually leting my dust coat tack up right now, so I'll let you know how close it is. I just hope my Chevelle doesn't turn into an Alliance!
