Jusat taking a shot in the dark here but is your wiring harness to the starter in good shape? Has it laid on the exhaust manifold, got fried, and shorted itself out?

Try removing the switch from the dash, start the car and see if the engine dies. If it does not, the problem is in the wiring harness.

How about the safty switch on the coloum also ck the harness balk head that goes into the firewall and hooks to the fuse box could be loose.

Go look at the starter wiring. Make sure it is wired right and none of the smaller wires are touching the hot terminal. This will back feed the switch with power. Just a thought. Bill

Bill ( whiskey ) Is right on target ) I had the same problem with my 68 after a starter change . Wires were touching down near starter. However , after I have said that I have had the starter switch on my truck give the same indication. Good luck .
