I put the padding under mine for noise control but it's not required. The ears tuck up under the headliner sail panels.

I installed the Jute (1/2") under the tray aswell for the same reason as Von, NOISE CONTROL........ I forgot to include it in my order from NPD so I picked up a piece from a locale carpet store, a 3'x6' piece cost me $5. I have some left over and plan to insulate the kick panels.

The original insulation was very thin and made of some cheap fiber material.
The jute works great as long as it is not too thick. I'd recommend using some sort of insulation as the package tray can develop some nasty rattles if not insulated against the package tray frame.

Your right about the thickness, I used 1/2" and it's borderline for being to thick. I should have use 3/8" to have made it easier to work with and fit a little better.

Yep. Flip the ears up!

FYI, JUTE is actaully called hairpad by a lot of the carpeet companies. Most dealers will also have some in a bulk roll for in-service stuff. We sell it by the foot length. (5' wide)

Upholstery supply shop has various things too...I've never used it for this application but I think trunk covering material would work excellent as it is maybe about 3/16" thick...do not use foam though cause heat turns foam to dust over time and the package tray gets a lot of heat action...

I am going to try this next time...I've always just threw the package tray in there...thanks fellas...learn something new everyday... :)
