I meen really, is it what it looks like? A truck load of spot welds, and then seam sealer?

well, with some of my cars its been rust, chewing gum and bailing wire. :D but yea, the body is pretty much spot weld and seam sealer, but the frame plays a big part in this also. without the frame our big, heavy cars would flex to the point it would fall apart, not even duct tape could hold it together.

some prefer to hold it together with bondo.... MUCH stronger than welds, new sheetmetal etc etc. graemlins/clonk.gif

Butt welds are nice when you want an invisible seam, but it isn't like you are "hacking" up the car if you lap weld with plug welds. After all, the ENTIRE car is done that way was you have pointed out. graemlins/waving.gif
