: PICS - Painted my COPO Clone last night
D Stroud Mar 29th, 07, 8:22 AM Well, I say "painted last night" but we all know that it takes months to get one ready to paint.
It turned out pretty good. I've got a few runs to take care of (looks like I'm a hoser :D) but the orange peel is at a min. so maybe I won't have so much wet sanding to do.
The color looks quite a bit darker in the pics than it really does.

crankitup Mar 29th, 07, 8:42 AM Very nice! I like the color, what is it?
ssal396 Mar 29th, 07, 8:48 AM Looks GREAT, love the color  :beers:
68chvlss396 Mar 29th, 07, 8:55 AM Great Color!! From the pics it almost looks like 68 Ash Gold.
D Stroud Mar 29th, 07, 9:23 AM The color isn't nearly as dark as it looks in the pics. It is a 2007 Subaru "Brilliant Silver".
I had planned to paint it in Cortez Silver, but I had the pant shop mix me a few oz of several different silvers along with the Cortez Silver, and when I shot the test panel with the different colors, this one blew all the rest of the colors away.
You really can't get a good idea of what it actually looks like. Its a much lighter color that it looks in the pics.
68chvlss396 Mar 29th, 07, 9:24 AM I must be going color blind!!!

:D No, your eyes are fine, the pics do make it look like it has a gold tint, but I think it is just the lighting in the shop.
If it quits raining, I'll try to get her outside at lunch time to get a few pics of it in the light.
350_Malibu Mar 29th, 07, 9:37 AM  I like it! I hope mine turns out as good.
Jerry Briggs Mar 29th, 07, 11:07 AM I like it!!!!!!!!!

D Stroud Mar 29th, 07, 1:59 PM Thanks fellows. :)
Here is a little better shot of the actual color.
But,as much as you guys like the way it looks in the first piocs, you may not like the actual color as much :D

If we decide we don't like it your gonna have to paint it again:D(looks great)
D Stroud Mar 29th, 07, 2:14 PM You know, the more I look at it, I think that first color would really, really look good on it. :D
ss396boy Mar 29th, 07, 2:20 PM Can you give us some details on what kind of paint(brand and type) and what you used for painting the Chevelle? (ie gun, compressor, etc)
THanks, nice job!
68chvlss396 Mar 29th, 07, 2:59 PM D, here are some pics of an Ash Gold 68. Sure looks similar to the first pics. My car was originally Ash Gold. I wish it still was.

Well, I'm am definately not qualified to give any advise on how to do it but, I do seem to get decent results. This Chevelle is the 2nd car I've done. But, the first on came out pretty nice too. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98876
My best advice would be to spend as much time reading as much as you can on this site. www.autobody101.com/forums/
Thats where I learned everthing that I do when I paint one.
But, here is what I did and with what;
First, the car was taken to bare metal. (my bro-in-law had already done this when I got the car)
Then, I sprayed a coat of Omni M170 Epoxy on the whole car. With a 1.4 tip cheap kit gun.
next, I sprayed Slick sand Polyester filler over the entire car with a 1.8 tip cheap primer gun, and block sanded it to within an inch of its life. :D
After it was completely flat, I sprayed a sealer coat of the Epoxy reduced 20% sprayed with a Sharpe SG98 1.4 tip gun.
Let that sit overnight then sprayed PPG Deltron Base Coat with my new toy, an Iwata HP-400 gun (A very, very nice gun) 1.3 tip.
I have borrowed my buddies Ingersal-Rand 6hp 60 gallon tank compressor which I used for everything.

Darn, it does look a lot like Ash Gold color don't it.
Freddy Mercado Mar 29th, 07, 8:15 PM WOW, that sure looks good.
eyewanta65 Mar 29th, 07, 8:57 PM Nice job, not afraid to lay it on there. I'll take a couple runs over orange peel anyday.
NOTHINBUT69s Mar 29th, 07, 9:36 PM Looks sweet
baddbob71 Mar 29th, 07, 10:59 PM Nice job! I agree on the Iwata-excellent gun! With epoxy as you base, polyester surfacer and epoxy sealer it should last just about forever. Well done!
Rmchevelle Mar 31st, 07, 10:39 AM Nice work! I don't see any tiger stripes, looks like the metallic layed out well, whats the trick? Is it that gun?
Steven's 72 Apr 1st, 07, 5:03 PM Very nice, good luck with the rest of it. I wish i was that talented!! I'd be paint happy!!!!!!!

How did you manage the moisture?? Dollars involved ? Btw, silvers and dark blues are the most expensive looking colors I think a person can put on a car. Very nice!

I'll chime in about what I have...........You can get a moisture trap kit from TP tools. I got one of their kits for about $120. Worth every $$$$$$. I have ZERO water coming out of my setup. If I were to paint, I would also throw on a cheap disposable filter.
perk68 Apr 2nd, 07, 1:53 AM looks great and from what i can tell it looks like you painted it in your garage.
I hope so because that's what I'm going to do, and if I could get mine to turn out that nice I would s*#t myself
D Stroud Apr 2nd, 07, 7:39 AM I did use a moisture/contaminat trap that my buddy already had with his commpressor. I also used one of those small in line moisture filters mounted right before the gun for cheap insurance.
And, Yes I did paint it in the garage. Me and a friend of mine spent the better part of a day hanging heavy (20 mil) plastic and completely sealed one bay of the garage air tight. I then hung two runs of vinyl soffit J-channel (which just happens to be the perfect thing to hold furnace filters) to the ceiling and slid in the filters. The plastic was cut out over top of each filter so that it draws air down from the attic area in top of the garage. Then I place 5 box fans under the garage door and turn them on med. You could get by with less fans, but, I use 5 to complete fill the space under the garage door but if you run them all on "hi" it actually moves too much air and cause the paint to dry to fast. Its actuall a pretty slick deal for very little money.
I can get some pics of the garage set-up if anyone would like to see them.
And, I think there are 3 main things that helped to get a stripe free silver base coat.
1. The Iwata gun. It really is an amazing gun!
2. I bought the premiun PPG Deltron base in stead of their cheaper Omni. (nothing wrong with Omni which I've used and like, but for the dollar difference between them, it just made sense to use the better color for silver.) and, I must say that it did lay out and cover much better than the Omni. and, now that I've used the Deltron, when I paint another car (I've already got people wanting me to paint their cars :D) I will probably use the Deltron. They way I see it is, if I had to re-spray a color coat, I coould have bought the better paint to start with.
3. I tried my best to keep overlap at 50%. Its hard to keep it consistant 100% of the time but try as best yu can to do it.
But, if you planning to paint your car, I would definatly spend as much time as possible reading all you can on this site WWW.autobody101.com/forums/
Rmchevelle Apr 3rd, 07, 1:16 AM I can get some pics of the garage set-up if anyone would like to see them.
I'd like to see that.
1bad69+70camaro Apr 3rd, 07, 10:46 AM good choice on the iwata dwayne. looks good too, no stripes and thats hard not to do on silver. did you use high solid clear? i was going to offer to spray the car for you but in turn will you do mine? great job man. good choice on color also.
