: Up and running again
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 1:33 AM Been back on the road for going on 2 weeks, although still using my old pushrods (ordered .120 thick about a month and a half ago). Put a little over 200 miles and three trips down the 1320' last Friday night. Feels about the same despite a bit more intake lift and lashing at .016 rather than the previous .022 (recommended .028).
I swapped the Miledon Pro Gear for a Cloyes Hex-Adjust and now have the Isky E-Z-Roller needleless lifters. Everything else is the same.....For Now.
Kinda disappointing track, like every Midnite Mayhem, no track prep. Choose between lining up on a mystery puddle or burnout dust, either way, it sucks to say the least.
I actually got a new best top speed, by .2 mph 127.53, but it came on a mid 11 run. In fact, the best I could muster was an 11.3 with a 2.047 60'. This on the same tires that netted a 10.711 @ 127.39 with a 1.63 60' last December. I do believe that I may have identified a definite problem. It doesn't become blatantly obvious on every run, but I had noticed it on a less than optimal run last time out.
I'm nosing over a few car lengths from the stripe. This explains a lot about top speed falling short of expectations. Kenny (kjett) and Mike (Wolfplace), amongst others have expressed opinions of 130 mph with my power. Currently I have a Holley Blue 110 gph with 1/2" tubing to the filter up front, then braided -8AN to the bypass regulator and on to the carb. Yesterday I ordered a Holley Black 140 gph, hopefully this will resolve this particular problem.
I also ordered 3" UltraFlow's (sick of the Flowmaster drone) and tried to order the Summit mandrel bent plumbing, but was told that it was for '68 and up, despite catalog listing from '67. Anybody tried this exhaust on a '66 or '67 ?
I'll attempt a link, showing my last run. It looks as though it's launching fine, but you'll notice a puff of smoke about 20' out. That would be the MT Drag Radials (ET Street Radial) letting loose. I actually had to lift twice befored the 60' mark.

Tom Mobley Mar 29th, 07, 1:46 AM beat a motorcycle, that's cool.
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 2:06 AM On our initial staging, he was lined up with another bike and I was going against a Dealer sponsored Subaru WRX. The other biker and the Subaru driver were friends and wanted to race each other, so we swapped.
I blew the guy away by several car lengths, so he sought me out in staging to have another go at it. He removed his mufflers, having his girlfriend carry them around. The next run traction was particularly poor (right lane), my 60' was in the neighborhood of 2.4. He got out in front of me by a few lengths, but I reeled him in, beating him by .03. I tossed my belts at the starting line, put on a spare alt belt after the turn around. When I approached the booth to get my slip, one of the starters walked up and handed me my belts through the window.
After swapping out the gear drive, I found that the crank "sprocket" was considerably thinner that the crank "gear", allowing the balancer to press further on to the crank snout, throwing my belt alignment all out of whack. I thought that I had resolved it, but obviously not at 7000 rpm.
GSOUPME Mar 29th, 07, 2:57 AM Rowdy,
I know it didn't run as good as it did the last time but it's always good to beat a bike. Get those slicks and i think you will be beack in the 10's.
Call me tomorrow
Greg
kjett Mar 29th, 07, 8:18 AM Glad to see you're back in black, Rowdy  You car sounds/looks real good. You put some really good parts in your engine, and I hope you have many miles of trouble-free motoring in your future. What is the altitude at the track you race at? When I made comments previously about your MPH I didn't take into consideration that the Las Vegas drag strip might be at a higher altitude.
blue66 Mar 29th, 07, 10:25 AM Jegs has a mandrel exhaust for our early chevelles, try them?
But they list it 64-72, maybe give them a call and see if it is the same kit.
Glad to see your up and running again!!
BillsCamino Mar 29th, 07, 11:29 AM Rowdy...Happy Birthday!! Glad the beast is back...
CDN SS Mar 29th, 07, 12:01 PM Rowdy ..... sounds good , nice to see you back in action
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 1:53 PM Thanks all.
Kenny,
Altitude is right at 2100', there was a little bit of a head wind that night. The video is of my last run of the evening, approaching 1AM, probably near 60 degrees. When I ran the 10.711, it was below 40*.
Brian,
I checked out the exhaust in the JEG'S catalog, I think that I may give them a try. The obvious difference between Jegs and Summit is Jegs has a seperate piece over the rearend, while Summits appeared integral with the tailpipe. This going by the photo provided, chances are the same picture is used for all applications though, therefore, no where near indicative of the actual pipes used. At least they have '66 included in the listing, even if the same part number is used all the way through '72.
Greg,
I probably won't make it over before you go to work, I'l keep in touch, I am interested in the tubular front control arms, already have discs though. If that guy is interested in buying the whole shabang, by all means, take his money.
I have yet to order the HRParts Anti-Roll Bar, but still have every intention of doing so. Who knows when, buying all these parts intended to worsen my traction problem certainly isn't helping my cause, financially or physically. If I knew that it would dramatically decrease my spin tendancies, then I would surely expedite the order, but I feel that more tire is the only answer with the track conditions I expect to see. Without a roll bar, I won't be an active participant on nights that they actually sweep the starting line.
540Hotrod Mar 29th, 07, 6:02 PM Great to see you back in business. Feels good huh??
So tell us again.....did you change to a different cam this time or the same one?
I think there should be some MPH in there too...even at 2100 ft. I would expect 130+ for sure.
Good luck with the pump. I've been using an Aeromotive A1000 for a few years with good results.
JIM
Yellow68SS Mar 29th, 07, 6:27 PM Hey rowdy, Glad to see your up and going again. As fas as the pump i too am for the A1000, it is not near as loud as my Holley black and flows more as well.
My dad is trying to get me to come out next month and bring the camaro....he wants to take his truck to the track but he won't unless im there to tune the engine. Its funny when he messed up the timing on accident it took him 2 weeks to find somebody that he thought i would trust to set it back and he has 4 mechanics that work for him!! lol
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 6:32 PM Different cam, as in a new stick, very similar profile. Was 267/273 714/714 112, Now 266/273 730/714 112. Still Isky
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 6:50 PM Kyle,
April 27th would be the weekend to shoot for. Car Craft is doing the Anti-Tour road trip from San Bernardino (Global West) Friday (4/27) to the LVMS with plans to participate in our Midnite Mayhem.
Their plans include attending the Pacific Street Car Assoc. L.V. Nationals as spectators on Saturday. There is a short article on page 28 of their May issue. I would think that the track should be well prepped on this particular weekend.
GuysMonteSS Mar 29th, 07, 7:02 PM Hey Rowdy I'll be interested to hear how your new lifters work,do you plan on pulling them after a bit to have a look see ? Keep me posted on them.
Guy
Rowdy Mar 29th, 07, 7:36 PM The consensus seems to be in the 1000 mile neighborhood.
BillsCamino Mar 29th, 07, 7:56 PM Rowdy...Happy Birthday!!
Are you trying to ignore me??? ;)
BigRed-L72 Mar 29th, 07, 9:05 PM
I worked at a gas station in Palos Verdes, Ca as a kid.
Now and then, this guy would show up in his triple black 66 SS 396 with the 425 HP (?) option.
I was awe struck....
That`s the car I bought when I got a real job !
Love 66 Chevelles
I remember asking him if it was for sale...He said " everythings for sale kid, $1600.00..." might as well been A MILLION at the time , that`s how far out of reach it was to me then..unreal
Rowdy Mar 30th, 07, 1:53 AM Are you trying to ignore me??? ;)
No, not at all. The "Thanks All" at the top of the 5th (or thereabout) post of this thread was directed towards birthday, as well as, car well wishers. However, I have tried to ignore many others today....and failed miserably.
In retrospect, you were the first of a short list to acknowledge that I have another year of depreciation....or appreciation, depending on how you look at it. Let's see....there was you.....then, there was you...and finally, uhh, you. I guess you're my biggest fan....or I yours. Oh, yeah, email from Al and/or Dot.
So, I'd say that I do owe you more than the cover all "thanks all".
THANKS BILL, I really do mean it, really. This year I have chosen to be vintage, rather than just plain old. Kinda Barrett Jackson Shelby, as opposed to GSA Auction, lot #687h....1/2 dozen 1981 Dodge Diplomats.

Bought mine for $1250.00 in July 1978.....The next 28 years saw 3 reincarnations. Each more than the last. I honestly don't know if I could handle the drama of another...I'm talkin' beyond postal, like Waco Postal!!!!
GuysMonteSS Mar 30th, 07, 5:23 AM Hey Rowdy,belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!

That is the weekend i was going for! i didn't know that stuff was going on though, that would be awesome.:beers:

:D I hope you enjoyed your day!
Rowdy Mar 31st, 07, 11:12 AM As a matter of fact I did.....
Since I have your attention, didn't you have an HRPArts Anti-Roll bar on your '70 at one time (maybe still do)? I seem to remember a cast off from Kenny going your way. Time has a way of blurring the recollections, usually clarity immediately follows clicking on "post reply".
If so, was there any revelations over the preceeding set-up? A few months has past since I posted serious inquiries, just wondering if most still consider it the best "reasonable" traction compliment. You know, short of Alf Wiebe type stuff.
BillyGman Mar 31st, 07, 11:26 AM Rowdy,
congrats on getting that 66 back in gear. Nice car! Sounds pretty good. I only wish that we're able to drown out the sound of that bike towards the end of that vid so that we can hear more of your car.
BillsCamino Mar 31st, 07, 11:30 AM I still have the HR bar on my '70.
I believe it was installed before Kenny's. I bought mine directly from HR Parts.
Either way, a '64-'66 model would be different than the '68-'72 version and is a different part number.
Works fine in my application and I wouldn't care to drive the car without it.
I've recommended it to a few others here that have used it with satisfactory results.
Bill
CDN SS Mar 31st, 07, 11:45 AM Rowdy ..... I really like mine expected it to be rough riding on street .not at all,but do run my rear shocks soft on street ...only slight downside is if you carve canyons with it installed you need a large front sway bar to compensate .Hotchkiss makes a good hollow big front bar ....... My car goes straitht with street tires ands slicks I like it bit pricey but for us no weld guys worth it easy install FWIW
Rowdy Mar 31st, 07, 12:34 PM Bill,
Between my post and your reply, I had run a HRParts search, turning up several threads, including a lengthy one in which you similarly responded to the very same question. Must have been where the bug had gotten into my ear in the first place, because it all became familiar in a hurry.
CDN SS,
Sorry, your first name is on the tip of my tongue, unfortunately, my tongue is no where to be found. By weld in, I'm assuming that you are referring to the Competition Engineering, Dick Miller, WolfCraft, Etc... type of anti-roll systems with the frame mounted (torsion) bars (either for or aft of the axle), having links going directly to the rear end housing.
I have to say that none of these have any appeal to me at all. Can't imagine the exhaust being routed all the way out the back with any of these offerings.
At the risk of sounding like the procrastinator that I, in deed, am. I'll go out on a limb and state that I will be ordering an HR next week. I know that I said the same thing last December, but in my own defense, the cash suddenly found itself redirected. Mainly to Isky. We all know where I'm goin' with this.

Yes those ones .I know from friends those work well too ...but your right tailpipes are a problem .....my 3" Stainless Works tailpipes cleared the HRP bar with only a slight massage
