: What clear to use on Rally's??
jdanlatta Feb 6th, 02, 3:52 PM I was going to powder coat my rally rims but the quotes I was getting were around $50 per rim! Seems pretty high to me...
FastSS396Man helped me out with the color for '70 El Camino Rallys being "Argent Silver" but I was wondering if it is a good idea to put a clear on them and if so, what kind?
Thanks for any suggestions-

1970 El Camino
Current ground up restoration in progress: New GM 350 crate motor w/ Weiand dual plane intake & Holley 600 cfm carb. All accessories like H20 pump, fuel pump, starter, shifting cables, are new. K&N exhaust. Doug Thorley Headers w/ Flowmaster pipe & exhaust. Rebuilt transmission from A1 w/ 2500 stall converter, Hurst pro-matic II shifter, re-balanced drive shaft, 15 Rallys w/ BF Goodrich tires.
Future plans: New rear-end to replace the 3.08? More radical cam w/ roller rockers, lifters and beefier springs including a new aluminum head-zz5?
Jimmy P Feb 6th, 02, 3:59 PM I think it's a good idea. They'll be easier to keep clean. Clean good w/ degreaser, then a pre-paint grease/wax remover. Use a base coat clear coat system. 1999 Volkswagon silver is a good color. LOTS of bright metallic. two coats of clear and you're done.
You don't have to use the best clear. You can buy the silver base in a pint. Go to a body supply store or a big auto parts store that carries paint. (NAPA)
70isfine Feb 6th, 02, 6:27 PM For $50 a peice to powdercoat i would get new ones.I got a new set of Wheel Vintiques 15x7's at a swap meet for $55 each and they're powdercoated aregent silver.
New68SS Feb 6th, 02, 10:57 PM Dan,
I'm not sure if any of the pics on my website (see sig below) will show them, but, I use Castle "Dull Aluminum" and then two coats of Castle "Clear" and they turn out looking show quality. Look at the ones on the vette. The ones on the 71' Malibu have been redone but not in those pics

Brenden Saylock Feb 6th, 02, 11:50 PM The clear coat you want to use is is Laqure clear. Either by good quality spray bomb can or the spray gun type. This will give you the correct hue. Just a couple light coats of the clear. Argent silver is the correct color for your wheels. Thats all that will look correct.
jdanlatta Feb 7th, 02, 12:55 AM Thank you for the suggestions-I neglected to mention that I have access to a sand blasting booth so I plan to sand blast and then primer. I'm off to the paint store in the morning to check on paint and clear.
Thanks again for the great suggestions!

If you had a wheel painted with the "correct" Argent Silver and then coated with clear "lacquer" sitting beside one that I had done with castle Dull Aluminum and coated with Castle Clear(enamel), I guarantee you nor anyone else could tell the difference.

cm70man Feb 7th, 02, 9:05 AM If one is using the "Details" brand of paints from one of the resto companies, which clear would you use. I'm planning on re-doing my 70SS wheels and want them to last. THanks!
Brenden Saylock Feb 8th, 02, 11:07 PM Dull aluminum is a good choice for the wheels. It looks just as good as argent. But the original is argent. It's just as simple to get that as the other. I cleared mine with PPG laqure clear coat.
