: 03 caravan starter wire problem
Dragn70 Mar 26th, 07, 10:56 PM My wife's van would not turn over tonight. I popped the hood and hit the key one more time and it fired off and ran. I drove for about 1/2 mile and the engine died and would not turn over. I have 12.6 at the battery and down to the starter. I wiggled the plug-in wires at the starter and it cranked an ran until I slammed the door and then it died. I wiggled the wires once more, it cranked and I got it home. Can someone tell me which wire in the harness is causing this, it has a purple and a yellow on separate plugs?
neutral safety switch wires?

Chris R Mar 27th, 07, 3:24 AM It could be the connection thats on the "S" terminal. If I remember right, the connection gets loose over time and wont stay in place as a tight connection on the tab on the starter. I have seen this several times on Chryslers.
Dragn70 Mar 28th, 07, 7:28 AM I checked this thing out last night and if it were an old car, I would say that its the ignition switch. It ran fine for a few minutes then died but started right up, died soon after and then would not turn over but the started relay is clicking, just nothing going to the starter. Did not find any bad connections at the starter.
sinned Mar 28th, 07, 9:13 AM No wiring at the starter is going to make the engine die, once it is fired those wires become irrelevant. I had a c-van that would do that once, it was the PCM. Try "tapping" on the PCM with a SMALL hammer when it is running and see if dies or hiccups.
Dragn70 Mar 28th, 07, 10:44 PM Tonight's test went as follows, cranked the engine, ran for about five minutes and quit like the key was turned off, Cranked right back up and ran fine, engine heated up and I turned the key off and it never cranked over again. sinned, I tried the tapping trick but nothing happened.
Chris R Mar 29th, 07, 3:15 AM 1. Does the engine just quit as if you shut it off with the key? And if it does, do you get any power from anything? Like dash lights, outside lights, radio, etc.
If this is the case, your loosing power electrically. If you still have lights and accessories, you may be loosing injector pulse or spark.
2. Or, does it sort of idle down till the point that it dies and wont restart?
If this is the case, then your loosing power thats related to the fuel system or air (usually sensor or ecm issue).
Dragn70 Mar 29th, 07, 7:20 AM I am loosing ignition fire only then I loose power to the start solenoid only, turn the key and the relay in the junction box kclicks but thats it.
prefectca Mar 29th, 07, 8:25 AM I don't know about an '03, but the older caravans had a ground strap from the rear of the engine to the firewall that gave a lot of trouble.

sinned Mar 29th, 07, 9:18 AM Possibly multiple problems. Crank/cam sensors will do the dying out thing and fail pretty often. Need a scan tool to see which one is dropping out.
If the starter is "clicking" but not turning the engine over, it is bad- REALLY common on 3.3/3.8 engines.
Dragn70 Mar 29th, 07, 8:26 PM Its not the starter clicking, its the relay in the fuse box. I did some research and there seems to be a lot of these complaints and dodge can't fix it but what some people have found is a broken pin on the instrument circuit board. They have soldiered it up and fixed the problem.
