: HOK Update
70_chevelle Feb 23rd, 02, 11:43 PM I got to paint the chevelle today, I got as far as the cobalt blue. Looks pretty good but I got some of that same chunks of gook splattered on the paint. It must be a bad batch of catalyst or something. So tomarrow I will block sand the cobalt then shoot the clear. I'll then wet sand the clear, shoot the stripes and clear again with one final wet sanding then buffing. It to me 10 hours today for taping and shooting, there are so many darn layers...

ss396boy Feb 23rd, 02, 11:58 PM Hey Lee, You need a break. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Too much working on the car is gonna make you crazy.
RandyB Feb 24th, 02, 12:59 AM I haven't used HOK paints yet!! But I think your not suppose to sand the base coat. If your still blowing chunks you need to set the gun up a bit better. We all came to the conclusion you were mixing correctly. It sounds like your blowing paint on to your air horns at the end of the gun. After it builds up a bit it drops and either lands on the paint or gets caught in the spraying pattern. You probably just have the paint flow a bit too strong still. This paint will take awhile to get good coverage in between coats and I've seen folks open up the volume to get around the car quicker. Is that gun wearing your arm out yet?? Take your time and check for build up on the end of the gun. Correct this and you should be fine..
Randy B.
P.S. Checked your site out. Car is coming along great. I went to a Car Show tonight and they had a GMPP 502 painted up just like yours. Looked bitchin.
MARTINSR Feb 24th, 02, 1:01 AM You may know that I was a paint rep for S-W for 5 years. I have to say that "bad batches" are almost unheard of. Not to say that they don't happen, they do. But not for problems like this. All out failures in products are as rare as a Z16.
The only reason I say this is that if you look for "other" reasons, you may miss something under your nose. "Gunk" comes from guns and poor mixing/stiring of products. I suspect it is from the gun. You would be surprized how much paint build up you can get in the path to the air nossal (tip) or IN the tip, even in a gun that you diligently spray thinner through every time.

70_chevelle Feb 24th, 02, 10:03 AM ss396boy - What, I was tolds I'm already crazy, so this feels normal to me!
RandyB - HOK told me you can sand the kandy, I just have to be darn careful not to hit the edges, so I'll tape all edges before I start.
The paint gun tip is always clean, when I refill the gun I look over the whole gun to make sure there is no paint drips or anything that would cause me trouble, in fact after all the coats of blue there was just a hint of blue on the nozzle.
The paint flow was restricted to 1.5 turns from stop, HOK said to paint the first 3 coats very lightly and the goal is to get the first 3 coats uniform, then open the gun for 2-3 more full wet coats. If anything this gun hates low paint flows.
YES, the gun wore my arm out! 3 coats sealer, 3 coats perl and 6 coats kandy, I have never felt my age until now ;) Plus my feet was wet from wetting the floor, when the clear goes on I'm wearing snow boots or something, nothing worse then several hours of wet feet.
When I built the engine I new I was going cobalt blue but I didnt think it would work good on an engine and I just dont like it when the car is one color and the engine is close the the same color but doesnt match so I wanted a contrasting color, yellow was the only color I could think of that would still look good.
MARTINSR - Come on.... I have to blame something other than me! Really though, on the first batch I used up the remaing catalyst and reducer from the inner fenders and I think this is when the damage was done, on the second batch I used new catalyst and reducer and I didnt have the problem, but it could've of been that I was flowing a lot more on the last coats so it could be that it just doesnt like the flow reduced. There was no buidup on the outside but it certainly could be on the inside, I only cleaned the gun between color changes.
Wish me luck on wet sanding today.

70isfine Feb 24th, 02, 10:49 AM Make sure you recoat your base before you clear, you CAN NOT clear over sanded basecoat!you must recoat it after sanding it.
70_chevelle Feb 24th, 02, 11:36 AM 70isfine - I planned on it, thanks for the input.

70isfine Feb 24th, 02, 12:53 PM No problem,by the way i have been watching your progress since Oct.Your really kickin butt,I was staying even with you on the progress of my car,but the last few months you left me in the dust!I'm still on the quarters, how much time per week do you work on your car? Keep it up.
70_chevelle Feb 25th, 02, 12:29 AM 70isfine - I spend too much time! Maybe 4 hours a day on week days and 6-8 on weekends. There are days I do nothing, waiting for parts etc. Then there's days I have to get caught up at work too.
BTW, got it wet sanded and 2 new coats of kandy and 3 coats of clear today, took 10 hours total non-stop. Tomarrow I will wet sand and paint the stripes then clear 3 maybe 4 coats.

normie Feb 25th, 02, 12:28 PM Lee.. Your kicking butt and taking names... Have you fully disassembled the gun and cleaned the needle and seat? get one of those water traps that connect too the gun just in case the temp difference is causing a moisture buildup?? Also, I don't know what type of gun you are using but I was 3 to 3.5 full turns from closed when I candy'd the bike and it flowed well.. Maybe you still have the flow restricted too much? I mean you are further along in the paint arena than I am, but trying too assist you in figuring out your issue.. Good Luck.. and while your sitting take some photos and post them for us.. I bet she sure is purdy http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
