: Filling Side Molding Holes on my '65????

Does anyone have any advice on welding up the holes left behind from the snap clips on the side of my 65 Chevelle. The molding in mention is the chrome strip that runs from just behind the front wheels to the rear quarter, and I guess was placed there to prevent door dings. I personally do not like that look so I have opted to remove the molding and weld up the holes. Just wondering if there is another way I am overlooking???

you need to weld them.

Nope gotta weld them. I just did the same thing on my 64. My molding runs along the tops of the fenders doors and quarter. Just weld them shut and grind them down. Just be aware of heat build up. I would move back and forth from front to back.

Try using a piece of copper or aluminum to backup the holes when welding. Your weld won't stick to either of those materials and makes it much easier to fill the holes up.

Thanks for info I have welded up the drivers side door with the use of a copper plate and that seems to be doing the trick. Mac.

How do you get the copper plate to stay put while you weld if you are working alone?

You might try using a magnet. I wonder if you could use the magnet for a backup strip? Haven't tried it.

What about using fiberglass patch from behind and filling the frontside w/kitty hair?

Just filling the holes without welding makes nice round spots about 6 mounths after painting. Then you get upset every time you look at the car and ask why you did it that way.
