The 70 chevelle with a 396 I bought last summer has a Erson JB 100 cam. I just tore my motor apart due to low compression. 2 lobes were round. I have no idea when the cam would have been installed. It also had a Edelbrock Tarantula intake on it. Funny thing is that the intake still has the factory machine marks on it, which would indicate its never been removed from the car since it was installed. As for the quality of the cam, sorry, I have no idea.

I've used a bunch of their stuff over the years. Used to work at a speed shop that was a WD for them. Good stuff, never had an issue with anything of theirs. There's a set of their roller rockers on my car right now.

they're a smaller company, can't afford to crank out junk figuring to make it up on volume like some of the big companies.

they're a smaller company

Really?

Go here http://www.mrgasket.com/ and look at the bottom right corner of the page.

They didn't use to do much R&D at all, mostly just copycat designs. Since MrG acquired them, that might have changed, but I don't know. As far as quality, well, blanks are blanks, same as anybody else's; beyond that, it's all in the intellectual property that's programmed into the grinding machines, and customer service.

Many of Reher-Morrison's cams designed for their Super Series engine packages are produced by Erson, probably to David Reher's specs if I had to bet.

Erson Cams have an excellent reputation for quality. Sig Erson was the shop foreman at Isky Cams, before starting his own company in the mid 1960's. The company was sold to Mr. Gasket group several years ago and was recently sold again to PBM Performance Products in Louisville, KY.
At one time, many of the professional teams in NHRA drag racing (Top Fuel, Fuel Funny Car, Prostock) were using Erson cams, but you don't see them much in these catagories these days. Of course, these teams are also paid to run a companies parts and/or decals, too.

I personally have not heard any quality complaints about Erson cams, but you always have to wonder when a manufacturing operation is moved and key personnel is likely lost. The company was originated in Long Beach, CA then moved to Huntington Beach, CA (not very far), then to Carson City, NV and now to Louisville.

Im gonna be the one guy with a bad story which is about 10 year ago. My 86 Suburban 1/2 ton 4x4 daily driver. Fresh motor ran fine for first 10K miles. To get a little more out of the stock 350 I put on some headers and did a cam, lifter, push rods and rockers all changed. Used all recomended manufacturer suggested break in procedure and used black cam break in lube as everyone suggests. Cam was a Rv grind hydraulic flat tappet to give a little more power throughout rpm range compared to stock cam. Started to hear a little tap about 3 hours total after initial start up with new cam. Could not get it to stop, was mild and sounded like the lgithest of noises. Pulled cam and lobe was wiping right out. I sent the cam back, erson tot hier credit gave me a brand new cam and lifters. Sent it back got a refund..Only need to get burned once for me. I ended up getting a factoryu grind from GM that I picked instead,,,cost me a little more...but was fine.

I never heard too many horror stories on their cams.....but I can say with 100% certainty that back in the Super Shops days, there was a LOT of junk sold under their name. Seems like they were one of the first sorta big guys to start inporting junk offshore stuff and rebranding it. I saw so many ill fitting oil pans, broken cam gear bolts etc etc it was insane. I mean even their chrome big block timing chain cover wouldn't fit over a stock type basic double roller timing chain without grinding half the lip off the seal area.

I know that none of my group would ever consider an Erson product purely due to the broken junk we saw with their name on it. Probably sad...because the cams are probably fine. They should have stuck with what worked.

Erson has had some good stuff over the years. It was an old time racers company. Many of these older drag racers still speak very highly of their products. Like any other business that closes, read that as getting bought out, it usually means it has served its purpose well, up to that point.

For those here that are not aware, one Terry Manton had some very, very close ties to Erson's back when! Also spoke many times with T-Willie on the phone about cam numbers.

Actually, Noel Manton - Terry's dad was the sales manager at Sig Erson Cams for many years. As the story goes, Terry was given a job at the factory, during his pre-teen years. Terry's job was to sort pushrods and put them into the correct bins. He became interested in pushrods (of all things!) and like they say - the rest is history . . . . . . .

Had an old JB (Jet Boat) grind back in the day. The lobe profiles are slow and lazy (a lot of duration required for the amount of lift) compared to today's modern computer-designed fast-ramp profiles.
