: El Caminos are worthless.
macs69 Mar 25th, 07, 10:13 AM They must be. There's a '72 in the classifieds here that appears to be in decent shape, with no bed rust, and a clean looking set of rally wheels on it for $1200.00. Now it's been re-listed for parts, and is going to be parted out because no one will buy it.
I always hear people in here complaining that they can't find decent bodies. Well, it seems to me that it doesn't get any better than this one, and for a paltry $1200, no one will jump on it.
I'd buy the car in a heartbeat, but I'm in Maryland and it's in California. By the time I pay a $1200 or higher transport fee, it's no longer a deal.
What am I missing here? Can someone explain to me why the car hasn't sold, or do we just have no interest in buying Chevelles or El Caminos here at TC?

Jim Mac Mar 25th, 07, 11:59 AM There was one like that near me, except for the ralleys. it came with the tranny in the car, and a bad motor in the bed. The kid was asking $1000 for it, I thought hard about it, but I just bought one, a friend of mine picked it up for $600.
On the other hand I bought mine in November. mine has rusty passenger floor. It came with a muncie M20 4 speed, 3.31 12 bolt posi,SS hood, floor shift tilt, discs, console, paid $1300 for it.
Last april, paid $1500 for a 68, AC (works) built 327,fuelies,turbo 350, torque thrust Ds,3.73 gears, disc brakes,PS. It needs paint, and I redid the interior, but im into it for about 2000 bucks.
Personally I love el caminos. its like the best kept secret. basically a chevelle with a bed! and less than 1/3 of the price. Jim
macs69 Mar 25th, 07, 9:01 PM I wish there were deals like that around here. I'd be broke all the time!!
Keith Tedford Mar 25th, 07, 10:39 PM In general, women don't like el Caminos. By association, hubby isn't going to buy something that wifey doesn't like. From what I have seen you can probably get half as much again for a Chevelle. No matter, I'm fixing up our el Camino for me if nobody else. It will be a nice match for our Chevelle.
Jim Mac Mar 25th, 07, 11:13 PM Keith, my wife took our 68 to work for the first time last week, all the airmen fell in love with it. most of them are too young to even figure what year it is.
It does make fixing it up easier with the blessing of the spouse. I just got a fiberglass cowl hood for it, and installed it this afternoon. And she likes it. Next time shes taking the 70 chevelle. Jim
Keith Tedford Mar 25th, 07, 11:40 PM I'm lucky in that my wife likes the old cars and loves driving them even more. Pretty handy with a 4 speed too. I'm sure she will like the el Camino when done but she does like the Chevelles the best. We added the SS hood, bucket seats, console and Vette Rally wheels with some fat T/As. If things go as planned, I'll switch to a '94 LT1 this coming winter. These work well in the big Impala SS cars so should work even better in an el Camino that probably weighs over 1/2 ton less. We would like to have at least one old car that gets decent mileage. I've seen several clean swaps and the owners are all more than happy with the results.
Stock72ElCamino Mar 26th, 07, 12:27 AM Bought my 72 elcamino for $400 (with 15x7" rallys) came with a 65 impals SS console, 2-283's, an assortment of GM radios, 3 rochester q-jets, and a whol bunch of ther stuff im still selling off. Just sold the car for $1725, and after I sell off the rest of the stuff I will have made about $2000 on the whole deal.:D :D :D :D the only problems with the elcaminos are you have to sit on them for a while cause the market for the is not as big as it is for the velles.
davischevy Mar 26th, 07, 12:36 AM Just spent a hard weekend working on a 70 elky (454, 700R, 3:31 gears). Trying to get finished so we can work out the bugs before the trip to chevellabration. Elkys have been cheaper than Chevelles but I still don't run on to bargains.
68KMENO Mar 26th, 07, 12:37 AM my wife loves the el camino it brings her plants home from the garden store , it hauls her new area rugs ,assortment's of furniture an anything else she can't get into her ecobox :) I'll let you in on a secret most people don't know a good thing till someone tells them about it ........ Shhhhhhhhh I like EL Caminos
macs69 Mar 26th, 07, 7:27 AM That's my point guys (and girls). We here at this site are supposed to be Chevelle and El Camino enthusiasts, tried and true. It just amazes me that someone can't get $1200 for a clean California rolling El Camino.
macs69 Mar 26th, 07, 7:29 AM Ok, someone finally bought it. I guess I can stop griping now.
rat_camino Mar 26th, 07, 7:48 AM Are el caminos worthless, or are chevelles just overpriced?
Brettd85 Mar 26th, 07, 2:16 PM Are el caminos worthless, or are chevelles just overpriced?
That is an excellent point. I still think that El Camino was an excellent deal.
sschevellefan Mar 26th, 07, 10:13 PM I love el caminos as much as chevelles but they are easier to find deals on. My wife and i miss the 69 I had when we met but she didn`t like the 67 I had. I was going to start looking for another chevelle sometime next year but I think I want another el camino. Probably a 68 or 69.
CAElky Mar 27th, 07, 12:58 AM Who says women don't like El Caminos?! Dem's fightin' words. :D :beers:
sschevellefan Mar 27th, 07, 1:03 AM Thats a very nice elky Amanda. I love silver.
CAElky Mar 27th, 07, 1:16 AM Thanks Anthony!
Though I will say I was a direct beneficiary of the El Camino "curse". Got mine for $1800 in '98. I have a lot more into it than that! :D
Motorhead62 Mar 27th, 07, 1:26 AM I love Elky's!
I would have bought that one if it had been closer to me!
My65CaliWagon Mar 27th, 07, 2:59 AM Exactly.
Gentlemen, I love El Caminos!
Good thing it sold:hurray: .
I hate it when classics are parted out:noway: .
I thought CA cars were worth more because they tend to have less rust.

Bill Clinton would not agree with you, he told of owning an elky in the 70's.He told workers at a truck plant"It was a real sort of southern deal.I had astroturf in the back. You don't want to know why but I did."(He must of had heavy duty springs and airshocks in it if any of his old girlfriends were built like Monica) :)

Looks like I'm too late, ad no longer exists.
Last time I saw an old Elky for $1000 it was so rusted the frame was shot.
I'd love to find an Elky someday of a 68-70 model but every one I've seen is rusted or bondoed over or the price is well in the 5 digits....
Of course I tend to go by the "too good to be ture" theory....next $1k Elky I hear of in decent shape will be gone over with a fine tooth comb.
Keith Tedford Mar 27th, 07, 10:59 PM I was talking to a car appraiser friend today. He knows of 12 el Caminos in our area. The guys just don't have them out very much. We'll have to change that.
dscabra Mar 27th, 07, 11:40 PM Have you all looked at what NADA is showing for 70 El Camino values? For a Custom (V8), NADA is showing $7k low to $21k high. Chevelles are two to three times that, and an LS6 is approaching $200k on the high end! I'll keep my $500.00 El Camino (http://home.comcast.net/~dcabral99/gallery.htm).

Elkyholic Mar 31st, 07, 8:01 PM i bought my 1966 el camino for 1,000 bucks running has rust in the usual spots (around the windows 1 small hole in the drivers floorpan) i just love this thing ( the girls do too  ) then i bought another parts car 1966 elky for 100 bucks rust free with a ss hood. You guys say its worthless i say affordable ;-) hey when i look out the front window when im driving im pretty shure its no different from a 66 chevelle. I dont see why people are so obcessed with the values of there car i dont know about u guys but i build them to drive them not to show off and say how much its worth if you want to do that you might as well go buy a mercedees or some other wussy car like that. just my 2 cents
