: Prepping roof for vinyl top

I'm in the process of painting my car with PPG Duracryl acrylic lacquer.

Before the flack starts, I know there are better paints out there, but I'm using lacquer, so spare me the lectures on that.

I ran some searches and found that the roof should be painted before the vinyl top is installed because primer is porous and the glue won't stick well.

I'm running low on lacquer and was wondering if something like Krylon spray paint would be suitable for areas under the vinyl which need repainting.

I understand that I should wait a few weeks after painting before installing the top.

Thanks.

Why don't you buy another quart of lacquer? It will be easier to apply, and cost wise will not be much different than two or three cans of krylon.

Don't use lacquer under the vinyl top. I would use a urathane so that water will not penetrate the paint if any gets under the top and gets traped. I used some old aircraft paint which is similar to emron.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I had another idea. I was wondering if a good hardware store interior/exterior enamel that's brushed on would work. That way I wouldn't have to tape anything or have to worry about overspray. Anyone done this?

Would the vinyl top Glue stick to POR-15 paint? I've never heard of anyone doing this but if it would work, seems like it would be the best way to prevent rust under the vinyl top.
Has anyone tried this or have any ideas about it?

I ran a search "primer vinyl top" and one post mentioned POR-15. They didn't like it because a conversion coat or something would be necessary for the topcoat to stick. No mention of wheather or not the vinyl glue would stick.

Most of my roof's in good shape. The bad parts are around the perimeter of where the top was, some pitting and minor rust. The worst part is between the rear window and trunk lid.

I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea for me to check out what 3M recommends for prep to work with their glue.

Edit: Just ran another search, "POR-15 vinyl", and someone said that POR-15 needs to go on bare metal, so that's out in my case since the 95% of the roof is good shape. Thanks for the idea though.
