Have you performed a fuel flow test to validate that the fuel pump is supplying the carb? To do this test, disconnect the fuel line from the carb and have a buddy hold it over a can while you crank the engine. Your buddy should see fuel flow out of the hose. If no fuel comes out, the pump, pump rod, or fuel supply could be the problem.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge on the line between the pump and carb?

Is the pump mechanical or electric? A mechanical pump is actuated by a metal rod that is driven by the camshaft. When the pump was removed, did the rod try to slide out of the engine block? Could the pump rod be missing or the camshaft lobe be worn down?

The carb floats might be misadjusted or stuck in the up position, shutting off the fuel supply.

Let us know what you find.

no i dont have a fuel pressure gauge. the pump is mechanical, brand new, when i first pulled the old pump the rod stayed in the block but after a few mintues of tickering to get the gaskets on and stuff it slid out of the block. so i just pushed it back in. and i havent looked at the floats yet.

Rob,simply unhook the fuel line from the carb & spin the motor over for approx 10-15 seconds,if no fuel comes out then the fuel pump was either installed wrong & pump rod is not actuating the pump, pump is defective/bad,line/s are plugged, hole in line/s sucking air, strainer sock is in tank is plugged, etc.

If fuel is comming out of fuel line when motor is cranking then maybe the needle & seat or float is stuck closed or the small paper or bronze in carb fuel filter was installed backwords closeing off all fuel flow into carb,i have seen both these things happen a couple times over the yrs.

ok guys i still have the same problem. im getting gas to the carb but from there nothing. i tried again yesterday. poured gas into the carb to prime it, i got it to idle good, but as soon as i would give it gas, it would bog really bad and every once and awhile backfire. gave it a little timing but nothing. i check the fuel filter in the carb its in the correct way. i pulled the fuel line from the carb and gas came out. i opened up my carb and made sure the needle wasnt stuck, and the float looked ok, but i still have the same problem. any other ideas guys? please help , this is killing me.

I am having the same problem. I think it is my gas (stale). My car has been in my gararge, for several months. I did put sta-bil, but I have read that it only helps for maybe another month or so. I siphoned it and am going to try fresh gas and see if it helps. Mine is also backfiring through the carb. I read a thread on here where the dude changed his plugs to a different type and it started to run smooth. My motor is a 396 bored 60 over, but the heads are not stock, i forget the # on them, but they are about 119cc with 2.19, 1.88 valves. The cam is an edelbrock RPM.

Sounds like a carb issue to me madhooker?? You have spark?? Sounds like you got gas to the carb? Find a buddy that has a carb for you to borrow.
