I trying to decide on which tires to use on my 69. I have done numerous search's and even posted a topic, but i still cannot get a handle on the tire issue.
I went on tirerack and a few other review sites for tire comparisons and in all of them the firestone firehawks indy 500 is the best tire in all catagories followed by the b.f.goodrich then goodyear. Yet most of the recommendations are for the goodrich tires. I Is there something i am not aware of about the firehawks or is it a case of tradition in choosing the goodrich tire. I looked into the original factory brochure and the option extras include the firestone and the goodyear tires. so how did the goodrich become king. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I bought Firehawks due to their across-the-board favorable rating. There are better tires, but I wanted to stick with the classic white-letters-on-the-outside look. I had BF Goodriches on them before and I can say the Firehawks handle better. I live in the rainy Northwest and they grip fine.

I bought the Firehawks for the same reason. Great tire.

IMO, Goodrich's Radial T/A line as an affordable, good muscle car tire put their name on the books for good. People recognize the name and associate it with being a good tire.

I work for Firestone and the Firehawk Indy500 is a great tire. I must also say that I have BFG T/A's on my 69. I like the old school look of the BFG and the only thing I dislike about the Firestone is the Indy500 lettering. The older Firehawks said Firestone and Firehawk. If I mounted white leters in I would have went with the Firestone. Just personal preference I guess. Let us know what way you go.

BFG Radial T/A's have great looking lettering. They're not great at anything in particular, but they are pretty good in all aspects. I'll run them on anything I run 15" or smaller tires on... their bigger sizes (17"+) are decent, but overpriced.

That lettering is one of the things that i dislike about the tires, And the fact that some drivers report loose steering via tire roll. I don't know how big of an issue this is or what conditions it occurs. One of the problems i have with the BFG's is they don't have stores anymore, you have to go to a third party to purchase and i would think it makes a warranty claim that much more difficult.

I doubt you would have a warranty issue that could not be resolved with BFGs that were bought through a local tire place. I know the local place I have dealt with is competitive with the mail order folks and they have great small town type customer service.

I Stuck with the factory SS wheels, and put 245/60/14 on the back and 215/70/14 on the front. This picture has a set of drag MT tires on the back.http://farm1.static.flickr.com/165/370471993_52ca298726.jpg

Can't recommend any particular tire, but while trying to find a set for my '66 Impala I found a really neat tire size calculator on the Discount Tire web site.

In my case one of my priorities was that the new tire was something close to 28" tall, which is what the original tires are. Wanted to make sure the wheel opening was properly filled. Here's the line to the calculator.

I have Indy's too. Not crazy about the lettering, but have been amazed at how much traction they give. Granted my rears are rather large (295-50's), but I can roll into the throttle quite quickly without breaking them loose.
