: Tubbing... a job I can do ???

My rear wheel wells are pretty much history (rusted mess). I will have the body off (raised) in a week or so. My plan is to have some street slicks on the rear, size I do not know at this point, but I am wondering if I should go ahead and "tub" this thing as opposed to replace with repro inner/outer wheel wells. This is not an original restoration obviously except for the interior and exterior paint for the most part.
I have a mig 135 welder and would like to know if tubbing is advised, is it something I could do myself and what are the pros and cons ? Thanks for any and all info smile.gif

IMO, a full tub for a "street" car is sooo '80s. You can get a car to run 7's through the 1/4 mile with a 10.5" wide tire, so why do a full tub? That said, a mini-tub job will allow you to run a good size tire and keep a stock appearance and even your back seat. graemlins/thumbsup.gif I haven't closely studied the chevelle pseudo-4link suspension to see what the next clearance problem is after moving the wheelwell inboard, but I'd guess that you could probably only get 2 additional inches before running into something (probably lower shock mount or lower control arm). Unless you want to change over to ladder bars or aftermarket 4-link or triangulated 4-link like Morrison sells, you're probably not buying much by doing the mini-tub.

Regardless, doing the minitub itself isn't _that_ big of a deal... just a matter of cutting and rewelding. We did my '67 camaro with a plasma cutter, which I think would be much easier than with a buzz wheel. There's a writeup of what we did (though it's a bit dated) at http://lugnutz.com/67mtub.htm to give you an idea of the tasks involved.

Good luck,
jC.

The inside of the rear wheel well is even with the frame, so to tub it, I'm pretty sure it would require frame mods. You should be able to run a 275 tire with a rim with the right offset. IMHO it's just too much work unless it was a race car. By the way, I'm in Jersey Village (290/Beltway). smile.gif

I just remembered that a guy with the screen name blaubooer (sp?) did a minitub job on his 70. You should do a search on his username and see what you can come up with. He has one of the sweetest Chevelles.
