Honest Paw,

I SWEAR its the original engine, those MEAN guys at the machine shop, had NO clue it was an original numbers matching engine, so they Decked it anyhow!!!!

Not to mention, Why are these engines being decked?

hmmmmmmmmm

If it smells like a fish.......

He never states it is original engine or matching numbers. He truthfully sais its been decked, no way to tell if its original or not. This is a true and fair statement. Leave the poor guy alone. :p

So why doesnt he just say its not?

And don't tell me what to do thank you very much

Oh c'mon... :( It was in jest. Still the guy doesnt deserve to be called out saying you smell fish, he hasnt lied about anything. Engine may or may not be matching numbers. If its decked you cant tell. The reason he said it is because he would otherwise get a million questions asking for the numbers and if its original.

Do 68's have hood pins? Why does the SS emblem on the rear of the car look so darn huge? I am just curious.

Mar 23rd, 07, 3:04 PM
The brief description is honest. No deception that I can see. There's a long list of things wrong/incorrect with the car, but the seller is up front with all the pictures. Looks like a nice driver. I'd take it out on a Sunday afternoon and beat on it. Probably some good power under the hood, with the rectangular port heads, high rise intake, headers, etc. Seems like it's a fair asking price too. Nice color, as well.

No hood pins till 70, and the rear emblem is correct from what I can see from a distance.

You know what,

Read all my posts, yes I am down on the guys trying to pull stuff, but what percentage of my posts do I try to help people? A LOT

And decking a street motor adds as much as a kickstand on a horse

It just strikes me as a way to say " Maybe " its original.

I dont have to be here, some cool guys here, I found this site by accident, thought there was merit to posting here.

In answer to your question; the 396 block in my car has a hole in one of the cylinder bores and it needs a sleeve. When a block needs a sleeve, machining the deck is a standard operation in addition to align honing of the mains if need be.

Not true for 68 SS396. SS wasn't an option. It was a model and should say SS 396 on the door panels.

Steve340
Apr 7th, 07, 10:45 AM
I agree with that

But thats yours, how about the other 100 true SS numbers matching, that just happened to be decked?

Anyhow, Im not worrying about it, Ill choose how I like, and the people who sell and buy things, can do it their way.

There are documented cases of 69's with Malibu emblems on the door panels aren't there?

Assembly line shortage on SS door emblems?

I'm not sure about 69's but I know some 70 SS cars had Malibu door panel emblems.

Still a nice car for a cheap price of only US $21,000.00

DaleM
Apr 7th, 07, 4:03 PM
I agree, nice car for the price being asked. It's obviously a 138 SS car. Whether the block is original or not wouldn't concern me at this price - considering, oh let's see, not stock intake, water neck, carburetor, fuel line, air cleaner, valve covers and not to mention the alternator is on the wrong side of the engine which might lead one to believe it's a 69 or newer engine. Point is, it's not being touted as a numbers matching, $60k opening bid car but rather (albeit from a dealer) a nice driver quality 68 SS someone could drive and enjoy.

Anyhow, Im not worrying about it, Ill choose how I like, and the people who sell and buy things, can do it their way.

And I also understand your immediate suspicion with some ebay sellers who are just out to make a temporary profit by knowingly selling faked high dollar cars.
However, I don't think that the seller of this particular 68 SS has fallen into that catagory yet, but just stating what he knows and doesn't know.
Don't let that stop you from continuing to post your suspicions though.
The sad, sad idiot's who attempt to deal in dis-honesty need to continue recieving the message that they are not going to get away with their craft that easily. You can bet that other Chevy forums have other cars covered under their particular umbrella as well as Ford and Chrysler forums most likely do.
Now, as alway's, its up to the buyer to do their homework and research the product that they are considering.

Did the 68 SS have a partial vin stamp on the oil filter boss?

DaleM
Apr 8th, 07, 10:50 AM
I don't think the 'alternate' location by the oil filter started until 1969, and then only at some final assembly plants - not all.

21000.00 isn't a good price....

when these things become gold.......

A steady progression since the 80's with an aggressive spike of over 100% increase within the last 6 years with some rarer special interest cars quadrupling.

A good example is my 69 Chevelle in the link below. I sold the car 6 years ago for $16.5K, which is what I had into it. 2 years ago I contacted the current owner after it had passed hands a few times who said he recently paid 32K for the car and may be willing to sell it for 35K. 100% incrrease.

A rarer example is my buddies 1964 Galaxie factory lightweight. "Factory prepped race car' 427 dUAL 4 CAR. One of 50 produced and one of 25 4 speeds with 3200 miles on it. "all 1/4 miles at a time"

Purchasded for 40K 12 years ago and estimated worth today is over 250K. 600% return in 12 years.

Far surpassing the rate of return on actual Gold itself.
