: Unrestored L-78 66 DD

This is a Fremont CA built car currently owned by the daughter of the orginal owner. It is a running survivor with orginal paint, interior, numbers matching non-moded components, 4 sp, bucket seat car with all documentation present. Little to no rust. It shows the typical wear and tear (vinyl splits/cracks, paint faded and chipped etc, chrome pits etc.) Mag style wheels, CA smog, no AC. Only mod is a 70s era 8 track.
Any ideas on value?

"D" is the keyboard key next to "S" in other words it was a typo, or a clever way to get people to read the post.

L-78? Or not???

The 1966 L78 (even in California) did NOT have ANY Smog Equipment (it was technically "exempt", the only Chevelle engine that didn't require smog equipment in California in 1966)... Well, they did have the PCV valve...

Well , I think the urestored 66 L78 will take care of that:yes:

Damn, I wasn't even thinking paint code :clonk: even if it wasn't why it was there.

Sounds like someone should check out the documentation, engine codes, VIN and Trim Tag first to make sure it is a real L78.

Actually it is a L-34 (my mistake) Although the window sticker says L34 375 HP so is it a L 34 or a 375 HP? Attached is a photo of the car and the window sticker.

At the time the L-34 was being referred to as a 375-horse engine, the L-78 was also being referred to as a 425-horse engine. They were downrated early in the '66 run to 360 & 375 horsepower, respectively.

A lot of replies here and no one has ventured a guess to Dale's original question....what's it worth?

I guess a lot depends on the clarification of the engine HP rating. If it turns out to be what's more commonly known today as the 360 HP engine, I will guess $40K. If it is a real 375 HP (solid lifters, aluminum intake), I will guess $70K.

The engine stamp code is TO918EJ6Z102 which by my notes is the 360HP manual w/ AIR code. The stamp matches with the VIN and the protecto plate.
My notes also state that the exhaust has been replaced with a non-correct after market system, the knee knocker tac is also non-orginal and the rear antenna is an incorrect replacement.

What the car needs is a good cleaning, new vinyl on the seats and fresh paint on everything that is painted. That is about it.

Any guess on value?

Dale, I assume you got my PM?

In the mean time.. How many miles on this car? and what about the TRIM TAG? build date, color code?

Try talking to her and find out what she know about cars and their current values (w/o actually asking her if she knows what is worth cause then your just gonna be shooting yourself in the foot) maybe you can get a good deal on it.

LOL.

OK...OK

Wait a minute. First of all let me state in again, just for the record. I think this whole market is insanely out of control.

Now. Let's look at this way. You pay 40K, as mentioned. Do a frame off resto. to make a 1000 point car. Let's say that takes 20k plus. 8K to 10K for paint, 2k - 3k for interior, another 5-6K for engine/trans/drivetrain rebuild etc. several more thousand for misc restor., chrome, etc.

Ok now you have a $80K car that is on the high end even as an investment consideration.

sorry i don't get it, I don't see it...It just doesn't make sense.

JMHO but I stand by my original estimate. 28 to 33K. Maybe a little more. Just seems a little more logical. :)

And... I'll just take one. The 66 is my favorite of all chevelles.

God DAMN those Hubcaps were some ugly suckers

The stock hubcaps coupled with Redline tires are my favorite asthetic feature on the 66-67 Chevelles.

Beutiful vintage stance. I'd run one no other way.

Sorry about the copyright infringement on the photo but it proved my point nicely and was really easy to find. :)

Oh but Greg, that is were your thought process is flawed.. You don't take a Survivor and do a Frame off Resto on it.. you leave it as is, a good clean up, replace some necessary parts, but essentially Leave it be.. TRUE SURVIVORS are very hard to find.. so, no, you don't pay $40K for it and then sink all that money in it.. :)

Mike

PS That's a sharp lookin car, copyright infringement aside :D

Actually those weren't stock hubcaps, they were an option;) these were stock, and you wouldn't run one this way?:( http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/medium/IMG_0090.JPG (http://javascript<b></b>:;)

I agree with Mike, I'd love to get my hands on a 66 survivor and just look & learn  ,

Mike,

I agree. That's exactly what I would do as well or at least hold off as long as I could. You know how Chevelle guys are. After a while you start mess'n with this and mess'n with that and before you know it, it's in pieces all over the garage. :D

That's why I always tell guys who offer me Survivor cars that I don't want it, not even at a good price.. why? because I like fresh, fully restored 66's... and if I got it, that is what I would likely do.. and that's bad... so I rather a car like that go to someone who likes em Original.. and there are many who do.. I love them Survivors.. it is those cars that allow me to get the FACTS right, they are the Blueprints! I love looking at them and taking pictures!
