: I never new my HEI module had a rev limiter!
big454blockchevy Mar 21st, 07, 3:32 AM I purchased this MSD module about 2 yrs ago and had it on my distributor without ever knowing it had a rev limiter adjustment! Or am I wrong here ? That is the msd module I have in my dizzy. I will take my distributor back out tomorrow and try to locate that adjsutment for the rev limiter. I also found out it Traction Control Detection. READ this
TRACTION CONTROL DETECTION
The Extreme Digital HEI Module has a unique Traction Control Detection (TCD) code built into
its microprocessor. This technology carefully monitors and examines the signals of the ignition.
If the TCD determines that any signal has been modified in any way, the ignition will be put into
a low rpm rev limit mode to immediately slow the car. Before this rev limit is imposed, the TCD
goes through a list of cycles and checks to qualify that the trigger has been modified. There is no
way to bypass or deactivate the TCD circuitry
MSD doesn't make a different module for HEI that I'm confusing for this one , right?
onovakind67 Mar 21st, 07, 7:45 AM What is "this MSD module"? Something like this one?

big454blockchevy Mar 21st, 07, 9:39 AM Well, it looks like the module . Don't know if it's the same module . I searched the msd site and that is the only module that I could find. I think the modules PN is 8364 . I can probably could go to msd in person and ask them. I live close their location.
Funny how it's so close to me and I've heard that they would not sell to me directly , it would have to be through a dealer. I would have to order from Jegs or summit when it's only about 12 miles from me. There's a forum here locally where some of the employees rides that are featured on msds' site I have seen on the forum and in person.

70GS455 Mar 21st, 07, 2:42 PM Many dirt/round tracks have rules that state you can't have traction control. So this particular HEI module will prevent you from cheating.
SMilligan Mar 21st, 07, 3:47 PM I have the MSD hei ignition module with the rev limiter (don't remember the part number off hand) I believe that traction control deal recieves an input signal from the engine ecu and throttles back the engine. Don't think it does anything without a traction control system.
dave_silva Mar 21st, 07, 4:43 PM TCD Technology is available in two HEI Modules:
7.5 Amp, with Rev Limiter
PN 83645*
Extreme Output, 20 Amp, with Rev Limiter
PN 83641*

So whichever of the two I have would have the rev limiter? I just don't recall the rev limiter (knob) and I just finished installing that module on the new distributor.
novaderrik Mar 21st, 07, 6:51 PM so is there a set rev limit, or does it just sense if the engine starts revving a bit faster for some reason- say, a loss of traction- and cuts it back until it doesn't do that any more?

That's what really is concerning me. I have had problems at wot and it cutting out . I am wondering if this module was the reason I had what felt like a rev limiter. Although I switched out the dist. and my problems have gone away. Maybe it was both , a worn out dizzy and the module somehow limiting my rpms.
BillK Mar 21st, 07, 7:55 PM (915) 855-7123 ... ask MSD and then let us know what they say. Probably wont even be long distance if you live next door :)

Ok, I get it. I'll shut up now about my module . Just kid , I'll call em up tomorrow and see what they say. Just hoping someone using this module would chime in and share their experience with it.
PCB67SS Mar 21st, 07, 8:05 PM I recently bought a GM part# 88961867 Billet HEI and had suspicions it was built for them by MSD. I asked the person I ordered it from if it had a adjustable rev limiter and they said no. After receiving it, I opened it up and found the adjustable rev limiter installed in it....go figure....Its not mentioned in GM's performance parts catalog either.

Ok, I checked the msd forum section(did a search) and the module I've got is the old module pn8364 , the update module is pn8364(5) that has the rev limiter and the TCD. Wish I had known this before taking my module out again. It turned out ok I guess , since I took the dist. out again to check on the bronze gear and how it's meshing with the cam gear. All appeared secure at this time! :D . I seem to have my ignition problems solved , I did a burnout yesterday leaving my 700r4 in D and letting the trans do the shifting . It went up to 6700rpms right away shifting to 2nd then 3rd no problem. I had not realized this but the good chunk of tire left behind smoking caught on fire! Hopefully this Friady I can get me my 11 sec all motor time slip. :)
