Is there any reason not to weld in the patch? Is there anything serviceable from the top of the trans?

I welded mine on, if I ever have to service it, it will be coming out!

i used pop rivets, just in case it gives me guff if i ever have to take it out

I agree .except maybe changing the shifter , if you decide later to get better shifter be a pain to pull trans for that ..also in my car trans is up close to floor to get trans out you need to ensure the trans will drop enough to let shifter stub clear the hole in floor I used a small bolt in cover around shifter for that reason

I rather like the concept of welded just because it won't leak crud up into the passenger compartment. At least go for sealed.

Pop riveted mine then used a thick commerical sealer so fumes wouldn't come in the cab. If it needs any servicing typically it has to come out. Just remember you may or may not want to upgrade the shifter some day & taking the tranny out just for that would be a PITA. I have a cover that I can unscrew just around the shifter point just incase for that reason.
