: How To Identify A Muncie In Car
larietrope Mar 19th, 07, 10:35 PM I bought a 69 Chevelle. The shifter says Muncie. It is pretty sloppy like a stock shifter would be. How can I identify it as a Muncie trans for sure with it in the car ?.
I want to put an old style Hurst shifter in it. How would I determine what to buy and where ?
Thanks.
Tod Mar 19th, 07, 11:28 PM Welcome aboard! You may want to do a search on Muncie Transmissions. You'll get a lot of information and you may even find the answer to your question.
I'm no "Muncie" expert, there are those here who are, but from what I have read on this forum, the only TRUE way to tell what tranny you have is to take the side cover off and inspect the gears. Casing numbers are no indication of what's lurking inside of your case. People switch gears all the time.
If I'm wrong boy's please chime in and help out, I don't want to give this gentlemen the wrong information.
Good luck
Tod :beers:
DZAUTO Mar 20th, 07, 12:14 AM Identify a Muncie installed in a car------------------toooooooooooooooooooo easy!
First ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Muncies are alum. If its cast iron, it isn't a Muncie.
Second, look at the side cover. A Muncie side cover has 7 bolts, a T-10 (and Super T-10) has 9 bolts on the side cover. There is NO mistake.
If determining whether or not it is a Muncie is all you are interested in (for now), then that is all you need to look for.
If you want to know year, gear ratio, etc, etc, then it becomes a little more involved.

And, if you can't remember which one has how many bolts ... a muncie side cover has a, for lack of a better word, "peak" on the top edge and is more or less trapezoidal in shape... see link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Awesome-Muncie-M21-4speed-Prof-Build_W0QQitemZ130089727888QQcategoryZ33733QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem
A T10 (or Super T10) side cover has a very rounded bottom edge, see link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1961-GM-T10-Close-Ratio-4speed-Pro-Rebuild_W0QQitemZ130089728419QQcategoryZ33733QQrdZ 1QQcmdZViewItem
Both the muncie and T10/ST10 will have two shifter arms on the side cover, and one on the tail housing ... whereas a Saginaw will have three on the side cover. larietrope Mar 20th, 07, 7:24 PM Thanks guys,
What I'm looking for is how to determine what Hurst shifter to buy to replace the sloppy one now in the car ( has muncie on handle).
OutCast Mar 20th, 07, 9:51 PM I'm all ol' skool, but always liked, and had good luck with, Hurst Competition Plus. Fun to bang gears with.

Hurst makes a shifter (Competition Plus) SPECIFICALLY for 69-72 application. From the factory, the handle (bench seat or console) came through the tranny tunnel almost in the dead center. The shifter that Hurst makes for the 69-72 also comes through in the exact same location. There is also a replica handle, made to bolt to a Hurst shifter, which has MUNCIE stamped in it just like the original shifter handle. Thus, you can have the excellent shifting of a Hurst plus the look of a factory shifter.

Tom,
I may be slow, or not looking in the right place, but I have not been able to find the Muncie handle that bolts to the Hurst shifter anywhere. Can you steer me to where I can get one? I have found the complete Hurst shifter w/ Muncie handle, but I already have a brand new Comp Plus and only want the handle. Also, do they have for both bench seat and bucket seat cars?
Thanks in advance
