I have a few questions for the body guys out there. I pretty much need to know what grits of sandpaper to use from start to finish on a full repaint. I d/a ed the entire car to bare metal with 80 grit and the front clip is all new Goodmark still in e-coat. Can I variprime over 80 grit sand scratches, or is there another step? Should I scuff the e-coated clip or sand it off? I basicaly need to figure that out and then what grits for filler, icing, blocking the sanding primer that will be over the variprime, and the best way to sand the jambs. Any advice that could save me major problems by just guessing would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Jim

Hey, DA over the 80 with 180 and then Variprime. You could also 180 over the new parts and Variprime. 2 coats Variprime, scuff with gray Scotchpad and prime(or400). Europrimer went over the Variprimer last time I used it but this may have changed. If there are just door dings you can use most plastic fillers over the Euro. Ask the paint rep to be sure. I'd finish the mud with 320-400. Sand the jambs with gray scotch if smooth 400 if corn cobby. You can spray a guide coat with satin black as a guide(smoke it on) it helps to know how much to take off. If you use a sealer before you paint all surfaces could be left sanded with 400. If no sealer then I would say 800. Different paint systems have different recomendations. This is what I remember from having worked with Euro&Variprimer 7yrs. ago as a painters helper in a #1 bodyshop. I may have misse something....anyone.....anyone.....Well I hope this helps. Andrew

SS touched most all the bases. I would just shoot Variprime over the DA'ed bars steel
Two coats. and then the intire car in Euro
two coats.
The E coat on the new panels only need scuffing with RED 3M pads B-4 Uro-prime.
You must over coat the Variprime within 2hrs. with your Uro-prime.

if your new front clip was anything like mine from goodmark i would 180 da them too. it looked like they sprayed (poured) that crap on---on the beach upside down on a windy day. There were runs all over and sandy dirt in places. That so called e-coat from goodmark is not like the e-coat from GM. Da that stuff down and variprime.

Thanks guys. That is pretty much what I thought but I needed some advice from some one who knew for sure. Yes uroprime is still what goes over variprime and I think you can just let it flash then primer right over it. I'm sorry to hear about your panels budruski, mine are perfect- real nice and smooth e-coat. I think the red scotchbrite will be all they need. One more question guys, I kinda distorted the lead at the sail panel seam with the d/a - can I reshape it with filler or will it not work? Thanks again for the responses! Jim

budruski is correct if the new panels are
rolled in the dirt B-4 E coating, Put your DA to work and the the Variprim the bare steel. Yes you only need to let the variprim flash off B-4 over coating it.
As for the sail panel lead seam.
You will have no problems mudding over it with plastic filer AKA Bondo to smoothe out the seam area.
