On a '69 SS, was the factory stripe down the side painted on first and then the body color painted over it using a stencil, to then reveal the stripe when removed? Or was the body color painted, and then the stripe painted on, over the body color?

Addendum/Edit: In continuing search, I found one post that stated the ORIGINAL stripe on a '69 was a DECAL, and NOT PAINTED. Is this statement correct? (The assembly manual refers to it as a "paint stripe"......)
