: column conversion
kevinc Jan 3rd, 01, 9:21 AM I want to change my 1966 Chevelle from a column shift to a floor shifter. Does anyone make a column conversion that would eliminate the shifter? Has anyone done this before? I'm thinking of a nice aftermarket ratchet type shifter. Any advice on which one to go with?
Thanks
Kevin C
bb67H-D Jan 3rd, 01, 11:55 AM I would get a nice used complete floor shift steering column from a '66 and go through it completely. Check hub and lower bearing, clean and paint it. There pretty easy to r&r and you will have a like new column, cut your floor hole and your ready for any type shifter you want.

69ChevL Jan 3rd, 01, 7:07 PM I have a 69 that had a column... i recently, 2 weeks ago put a hurst shifter on the floor.. although the little nob that the column shifter is on is still there, you can hardly notice it, and the floor shifter looks 100 times better, and is alot more fun.
LMacdonald Jan 3rd, 01, 8:14 PM Kevin, I am also going to do a conversion on my 66.
CPP sells a 1966 Steel Tilt Steering Column w/o Shifter for 300.
here is the URL. http://www.classicperform.com/chevelle.htm#steering
bb67H-D Jan 4th, 01, 4:24 PM LM,have you seen these columns? If originality is not a big concern sounds like a piece to go with.Kevin I would check one of these out - unless you want original, than I would redo a factory floorshift column.

LMacdonald Jan 4th, 01, 7:36 PM Brett, I have not seen them yet. I ordered the disc brake conversion from CPP and I want to see the quality of that shipment before I buy anything else from them.

Cardiac Jan 4th, 01, 10:35 PM I just did it to my 67 Elcamino. REAL EASY to do. All you need is the cover. I may have an extra one, I'll check when I get home from work.
kevinc Jan 5th, 01, 5:23 AM Hey Cardiac,
If you do have another cover in your garage let me know. I would be interested in that. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Is it just a matter of disassembling the column and replacing the collar? Please let me know what you had to do to change it over.
Thanks,
Kevin C
mr 4 speed Jan 5th, 01, 2:17 PM I've always ground down the shifter "nub" carefully with a die grinder, fill it with a little bit of A/B epoxy, little bondo, little sanding, then some primer and paint...works for me,and you'd be hard pressed to notice...once you grind down the "nub",there's not much to fill, just a small little square. My mods aren't for everyone, but, hey,it's the end result that counts http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

bb67H-D Jan 6th, 01, 9:46 AM Mr 4sp, that would probably be the easyist thing for kevin to do but you will still have the shifter flange of the inner column tube showing in the engine comparment a floor shift column inner tube of course does not have the flange. If that does not matter to you, you could do as mr4 says or just replace the coller with a floor shift coller just make sure all springs, wasners, spacers etc. go back just as they came out. I have a spare '67 floor shift column [sb] but it won't fit a '66.
