Still a good builder though
If he wants a lot for the original engine, get back with us, might not be a deal

Nice starting point, looks pretty well rust free

Tell him to take his engine and his Turbo 400 powerglide and Shove it where the worms live.

No such beast as a th400 powerglide. In that model year, auto trannies that were available are as follows.

Powerlide
Th350
Th400

The body looks like a good start tho. What is he asking for the car with no m/t?

Edit. Thats a Malibu

As others have noted above, in 1969 and 1970, the 396 was the base engine with the SS option and could be upgraded to the either 454 engine. In 71 and 72 the SS option was a dress up trim option and could be ordered with when any optional V8 was ordered as well - be it 350-2, 350-4, 402-4, or 454-4.

The only engine you can find to make it a numbers matching car is the original engine since the CON VIN would be on that engine. The best you can do otherwise is to build a date matching car.

One nice thing about a Canadian-built Chevelle is they have records and by supplying the VIN and about $60, you can get a confirmation sheet showing the options the car came with - like this:
