when I come across a high in my mud that I can't get a dolly behind I try the spoon and hammer that works wonders.
But if it is too stuborn can I get the high down with my Eastwood shrinking tip that goes in my stud gun? How close can the heat be to the mud without hurting?
When exactly do you guys use this shrinking tip, just to shrink "oil can" or on stuborn highs too?

Use the shinking tip for shinking areas that are oilcanned, where the metal area needs to be reduced. If you have a high spot that isn't stretched very bad just use a hammer to work it down. Sometimes just some very very light picks with a sharp pick hammer will work an area down and also take care of some of the stretch. Any time you hammer and dolly an area with a hammer on dolly technique the metal will stretch some with each strike of the hammer.
For very large extremely stretched areas that are beyond the usual oxy/acetylene torch shrink or stud gun shrink, I take an air saw and cut a + into the area and weld it back up. The air saw removes some metal and the weld further shrinks and stiffens it as it cools.
Keep the heat away from your mud.

Thanks Bob sounds good, How is your son doing on the Nova? Hope your project is coming along better than my Son's car right now. We had to put his car on the backburner for awhile untill I get caught up with some customer work. I've got two 69 Camaro restorations going at the same time and an 03 Taurus getting a rear section next week, so the garage is full but it helps pay the bills this time of year. Dalton's car is completely stripped to a bare tub awaiting time to install the new quarters and door skins. His front clip is ready for test fitting. The engine is rebuilt and has been test run, now just sitting on the stand waiting to be put in the car. We had the four speed rebuilt and it's ready to go. I borrowed a jig from a friend and we narrowed a Ford nine inch rearend for the car and are now building the backbrace for it and collecting the disc brake parts he needs. It sure has been a fun project so far, can't wait till it's in the blocking stage and ready for paint, or better yet-the first test drive. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
