i have a 1971 chevelle with a fresh 454 block from 71. Does anyone know what timing i should set for my distributor?

Try 36 to 38, good place to start.

Is it modified Jason?? Most start with about 12 or 14 initial, and like Craig said, maybe 38 total. If it's fairly radical, most use more like 18 initial.

it has a mild cam, not to insane, not quite a daily driver. i think i have it around 18-22 now...craig ur 69 malibu sounds badass!

You have 18-22 initial..?? that's a little steep...factory specs back in the day probably called for 4*...mild engine should be ok with 8-12*...total 36-38..try to get it all in by around 3,000 rpm's.....be sure to check your initial timing with the vac. adv. disconnected and plugged...

8 to 12 and 36 total if your useing msd stuff if stock stay around 32.
