: ran out of paint, what to do before re-shoot?
MikeH Aug 23rd, 03, 10:02 PM well, I thought 1.5 gallons of base coat would do it, but I missed it by about a quart. I did a total color change on the coupe which required removal of interior and doors, hood, fenders, trunk etc. well I was down to painting the rear sections from doors back (front cap was already painted) and I only got 2 coats of base. I still have a few light spots so I think another quart will do it. my paint suppliers were closed when I run out so it will be monday or tuesday afternoon when I can get more paint. My question is what do I need to scuff the paint before I lay on a couple more coats of paint. It will be approx. 3-4 days between last coat and next coat. I blocked with 600 before I laid down any paint so Im thinking just go back over it lightly with 600 but would rather use a scotch-bright pad but want to make sure It will not leave scratches I can see through the paint. thanks for any tips.
JimD Aug 24th, 03, 9:00 AM You can use an ultra fine scotch brite (grey i believe), IMO pass on it use the paper. But in your post you don't specify if you intend on spraying the whole car or not. If just the back half is being resprayed, scuff with the 600, rest will need to be scuffed also for clearcoat adhesion, use 12-1500 grit or you will leave visible scratches.

You did not say what brand paint your useing..
They are differ as to the time needed for recoat or Base and the applicaton of top-Clear coat... If it's a major Brand Dupont,PPG,SW ect... you can access there data base and get there Tech sheet data, which wil contain that info..
sevt_chevelle Aug 24th, 03, 4:50 PM Dupont's ChromaPremier and Chromabase basecoat's can be recoated with itself anytime up to 24 hrs.
PPG's DBC, DBU and Global all require scuff and reshoot after 24 hrs.
Dont quote me on S-W base but I believe its 72 hrs, something to double check.
Dave Birdwell Aug 27th, 03, 5:33 PM Don't use finer than 600 grit to scuff the basecoat. You will have delamination problems if you go finer. This was straight from our Dupont rep. You will need to give it at least 2 good medium wet coats to cover the area you scuffed, and depending on the color, you may need another 2 quarts to be sure there's enough. If it is a metallic color, be sure you have enough for the final mist coat to even the metallics.
troy-curt Aug 28th, 03, 9:47 AM You`ll have to scuff lightly, follow the teck sheet advice. I use a clear recoat sealer.
Good Luck. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
MARTINSR Aug 28th, 03, 10:28 AM Do you have ANY paint left? If you do, I recommend that you try to make a last coat out of it.
