Did 3 ten mile loops, letting it cool in between. Can I hammer on it now?:D What are some of the signs, that I would notice, should watch for if something is going south?

But what a difference, it'll take a little getting used to, but it cruises so much nicer now.:hurray:

I cant remember exactly from when I changed my gears in my Camaro or Chevelle, but I think Richmond recomended 500 miles before any abuse. I know that for the Camaro, all I did was to drive the 160KM (100 miles to the track as the break in, then beat on it like it was stolen to a 12.3 at 110.7mph. The Chevelle wasnt much better, maybe 200KM's and run a 12.9 at 116mph. But I am not the best role model to go by. My cars spend much of there time with my foot to the floor.

I broke mine in for 2 miles until I got to the paved road. Then it was to the floor. :D Big Gear Head says its okay so you might as well bury the pedal.

Hoping for better weather tommorrow. Get it on over to the highway, see what happen's at 75.

Let us know how it rides at 75. I'm considering the same bump up from 2:73's.

I've got 3:08's in my 66 with a 4 speed. I love it for freeway cruisin'! I'll drive over to Goodguys/DelMar the end of the month with it. Love those 6 hour cruises with those gears.

It amazes me how many people with 3.73s want 3.08s and how many people with 3.08s want 3.73s. Too bad they all can't get together and swap rear ends. But then I guess I wouldn't sell as many gears. :D

pedal to the metal man! Hammer down and if it lets go.....it wasn't ment to be. I get on it the first mile to see if it breaks.

BGH,man you hit the nail on the head with your statement (It amazes me how many people with 3.73s want 3.08s and how many people with 3.08s want 3.73s.,its so true.

Your in the buisness of gear & rears (no pun intended) and are are the best judge of that for sure.

I guess thats where i feel the old 3:31s fit in as the best all around compramise of streetability vs performance gear that was ever put into muscle cars without an overdrive of some sort IMHO.

3:31's are not perfect for either use but they are very good for dual use. You can still cruise at 65mph -maybe 70mph ok with out completely killing the motor for fairly long distance crusing like 100-200 miles (maybe not 1k mile cruises) like would NOT BE THE CASE with 3:42's,3:55's ,or 3:73's that turn more rpm at 65mph-70mph then the 3;31's do. But with the 3:31's you still have decent seat of the pants perf feel on the street and also if you hit the strip once in a while for fun & not serious competition esp with a mild BBC.

I went from 307's to 331's 2 yrs back and it woke the car up perf wise and also reduced the 3rd to 4th to 3rd to 4th shifting arround town that drove me nuts with the 307's(mild perf 402 bbc with M20). But i have to admit once in a while when i am crusing on the interstate at 65mph-70mph(max) and am being passed like i am standing still thats when i wish i had the 307's back for maybe an hr so i could also cruise at 75-80mph going to a sat night cruise thats out of town/not local. But on the other hand reducing the back and forth shifting a noticeable amount inbetween 3rd & 4th gears around town along with a fair amount better seat of the pants perf increase too is a small price i am willing to pay for having the 3;31's and plan to stay with them. Maybe when i become a real old fart (like 65/no offence to our older T/Chevelle members) i will change back to the 3:07's when i am retired doing much longer cruising to shows or maybe even sell her and get like a 64 or 65 impalla with a 327 or better yet the milder hyd cam'd 409/409 (not the 409/425 solid cam) with AC. The only real best of both worlds for me right now would be to install a 700R4 or a new manual 5 or 6 speed O/D trans neither of which i can afford at this time or would be willing to install in my #'s matching 1969 Chevelle SS 396/4spd/12bolt car i have owned for 29+ yrs.

Do you really think there is much a seat of the pants difference between the 3.07s vs 3.31's?

I'm getting ready to put a posi in my rig- currently have 3.07s, i picked up a set of used 331s- but keep waffling about what i want to do. I love being able to drive the car on the freeway with no problems, but i feel like i'm missing some of the get up and go the lower gears would give me on the street...

Guess i'll have to make my mind up soon, plan to do it in a couple weeks.

Ben, use the 3.31's. You'll notice some seat of the pants feel & not really notice any downside

I've got the car apart again, doing the Grand Cherokee steering gear swap. Got cruising at those high speed's and realized that the car was way loose.:D While I'm at it, I'm switching to some performance shocks.

I'm thinking that the whole theme of the car has just swung to Pro-Touring, the whole drag racer thing ain't working. In order for me to enjoy the car, it's gotta be much more cruiseable, then acceleration. I'm gonna look into a SC&C stage 2+ kit, and, try to trade up my rallye's, and the Centerlines for a better set of tires and wheels.

The 3:08's really did make a noticeable change to the car, yet it still got alotta poop to it. But, a really stout 468 will fix any gear to an extent.:hurray: Once the weather and my latest upgrades are finished, I'll give a detailed report.;)

BEN, when i changed form 3.07 to 3.31 gear 2 yrs ago in my 69 velle with m20 & mild 396 approx 370hp/430-440lbs trq i did feel a substantial difference in seat of the perf feel esp when getting into it. The motor/car really felt a fair amount stronger with the gear being the only change.

It was worth it to me but to someone else it might not be enough of an inc in perf to bother with.

What unit are you going to put in for a steering gear?

I scored a 93 Grand Cherokee unit at the junkyard. Look at my post in Pro Touring.

Does it also depend on how loud your exhaust is??? I'm thinking that cruising at 3000rpm's is a lot more tolerable on a car with mufflers vs a car with glasspacks or just straight pipes.
