I read the chevelle Tech archives to learn a little more about POR-15. One person mentioned how the frame will look excellent when done, if YOU BRUSH IT RIGHT. Need info on brushing technique and type of brush if anyone can be specific. I want to paint the Chassis black, do i need to prime it first?
Frame is in excellent condition, just a little surface rust hear and there.

Thanks

No primer needed. Use the Por's Metal Ready to etch the metal on the frame, apply Por 15 first, and eight hours later you can apply Chassis Black as a topcoat. No sanding needed either. Your Por 15 and Chassis black should be thin when you apply it. If it has thickened from sitting on the store shelf, you may have to thin it with Por Solvent.
A good quality brush and a foam roller are all you should need. It flows out really well when it dries. Just be sure to allow it to dry between coats. You do not recoat when tacky like you do with conventional paints. It must be dry enough to let you drag a finger through it before applying a second coat.

Do a search under my name in the suspension thread. I put several post there about POR-15 and frame painting. If done right it will turn out very nice.

I ran across another possible alternative the this weekend. I was thinking about using the
POR15 so when a buddy tried it I wanted to check it out. After the 1st coat it looked great. The problem is after he put on the second coat it glossed way up. It turned out too shiny for my taste.
While visiting the FT Worth car show this weekend there was a rolling pickup frame over by the PPG both. It was the absolute perfect simi-gloss color. I talked to the PPG tech about it and he said all it was is
their epoxy primer in black. He said he had
been using it for several years and never had any problems. He also said he does not color over it. It is used as the 1st and final finish.
While the frame would need to be blasted of any rust(does not convert rust like POR15)and and it does need to be sprayed from a gun instead of using a brush, I is a viable alternative to the POR product for frame coating.

What about scratching and rust from the scratches? I doubt that a primer would give you the protection from moisture, chips and scratches that por-15 gives. If it is color only that you are worried about I would coat with por-15 for the protection then cover it with your primer color. I had mine powdercoated though. I used Por-15 on the underbody.

I asked about that. He said he has had one car with over 3 years of service with no problems. He was telling me the epoxy base
is so hard that he has no problems with scratching or chipping.

Gearhead, the shiny finish is the reason you topcoat with Chassis Black. Plus, Chassis Black is not UV sensitive. Por 15 Black is UV sensitive and will fade from exposure to sunlight.
I recommend Por as an alternative to people who can't afford to go with powder coating and who don't have access to air compressors and spray equipment. In this case, alternative does not mean inferior.

That was a pretty good show!!
