: PPG's new 5 star primmer?
zachscc Nov 8th, 03, 7:57 PM I was just at the paint store getting a quote and the tech tried to sell me on this new self etch called 5 star that can be aplied over old paint as well as bare metal, and it is a high fill sandable primer that can be thinned down and used as a sealer, to boot! Is this too good to be true? Anybody used this stuff?
TAGMAN444 Nov 8th, 03, 9:04 PM Do Not put and etch primer or direct to metal paint over a rust converter, they are not compatable. If you use a converter, sand it down after it dries, wash with lacquer thinner then you can use the Eastwood paint or a wash primer then urathane primer on top to do body work on or final paint. jmtsw

MARTINSR Nov 8th, 03, 9:59 PM Let me get this straight, PPG has a new product with the same name as a competing company?
I think you are mistaken, 5 Star is a company or just a label( CLICK HERE (http://www.autobodybrands.com/primers/2k_iso.html)) that "makes", and or "Markets" primers or is marketed under that name(I am not sure which).
Being I just searched PPG's site and found nothing, PPG is not calling one of their primers 5 Star.
Are you just saying that you saw this 5 star primer at the PPG jobber?
What EXACTLY is this primer, what is the part number?
sevt_chevelle Nov 9th, 03, 11:34 AM I work at a shop that sprays PPG, I TRY to stay on top of new and to be released products.
I have not heard of any primer with this name coming from PPG.
If its compariable to PPG's DTM(Direct To Metal) primers I think they are to good to be true. To me its hard to replace good old etch followed by urethane primer, but hey maybe am still stuck in the stone age smile.gif
Martin just out of curiosity what PPG site do you visit? I look throu the site http://www.ppgrefinish.com
By the way did you ever get the PPG plastic refinish guide you sent away for?
vettefella Nov 9th, 03, 11:43 AM The 5-star stuff sounds like an offbrand product made by AutoBody Master in San Antonio, Tx. Called Etch and Fill, it has the qualities of etch and primer filler all in one shot and is called a 2K urethane. It DOES NOT fill as well as a true primer filler, but does well. I like using it for some applications.
CAUTION!! Make sure you know what the old paint is that you are going to be spraying over. The Etch and Fill will cause lifting of some paints if the first coat is sprayed really wet.
zachscc Nov 9th, 03, 11:49 PM 5425-1 Direct to Metal -Primer/sealer is all it says on the price quote print out. I still don't know what I will use, it sounds like the good old etch primer over the bare metal and regular high fill over everything is the way to go, but hey I am quite new at this. The base color is Deltron 2000 which I know is PPG and the clear is DDCU2021-1. I hven't bought anything yet, so I will keep studying here.
MARTINSR Nov 10th, 03, 12:01 AM Here it is XSTREME primer click here (http://www.autobodybrands.com/primers/5425_x2k.html) It is not PPG but "5 STAR" brand. It is a "low end" product but all in all the 5 STAR line is not bad for the money.
But think about this, there are plenty of PPG products you can use that are recommended to be used together.
