there is a plate fastened to the lower part of the column that seals against the inside of the firewall. Are you using the stock column?

Well, I have some small plate ,but it doesn't cover the hole completely. It look s like a stock steering column.

Both my cars are manual so I have the clutch rod boot (see photo) covering part of the hole. If your car is an auto it should have a larger plate.

This photo is of a parts car that has sat in the AZ sun for over 20 years. I find it interesting that the firewall is painted body color and then the US models are sprayed black over it. Anybody know why?

Yeah, there is a sponge seal that goes between the firewall and the plate... it's around $5 from any resto place.
