I'm in the middle of a 700r4 rebuild and I have a couple of questions. Those of you who have used a Beast sun shell, do you install the plastic thrust washer that comes with it on the inside of the shell, under the brass plate, or on the outside of the shell?

And what did you set your 3-4 pack clutch clearance at, the ATSG manual says .060-.080, the Haynes manual says .040-.075, and the alto clutch pack I got says .025-.040. What have you guys usually do?

thanks for the help

on the beast sunshell you install the black plastic washer under the shell towards the center support/low sprag.when we build hi-po 700's we set them tight like the alto clutch pack says.for extra hold we also plug the 3-4 bleed hole. what type shift kit are you using?have you thought of using the billet servo instead of the stock type? greg

Thanks Greg,
I figured thats were the washer went, but I wanted to be sure. It seemed kind of odd that they have the new plastic washer riding against the plastic washer that sits on the low reverse inner race (Haynes book calls it a "low-reverse clutch inner race to reaction sun sell thrust washer"). But this is my first tranny so I will go with it.

As for the 3-4 clutch pack, I got the ALTO red eagle kit that PATC sells, it has 8 frictions and full thickness steels. I've been swapping stuff around, But I havn't hit that tight of clearance yet, so I'll keep trying.

The shift kit I have is the Transgo reprogram kit, and I bought a new separator plate also. I did get the billet 2nd and 4th servo kits. Everything is going together pretty well. Hopefully when I'm done I don't have too many extra pieces:D .
Thanks again for the help.

Thanks Greg,
Thats makes more sense.

I'm still working on the 3-4 pack clearance. Alto includes a .125 plate that can be used in place of the standard stepped apply plate. Using that plate, I still need about .025 more to get within spec (I'm at .055). Do you think it would be possible to use a two of my old standard steels together (.075 + .075=.150) as an apply plate, or won't this be strong enough? I figure if the .125 plate is strong enough, it shouldn't be any weaker to use two plates? I think I'm going to try to call alto and see what they recommend.

Thanks again fo straightening me out on the washer install .

I know this thread is old, but I had the exact same question as steve1972 did about the thrust washer. I Googled it and it led me here. Who knows if any of these people are still members of this forum but what a life saver!

Hey Kevin. 10-4 on the old thread, But very good info is out there if you look. My problem is I see an old thread and reply to it and i get come backs about the old thread and it's probibly fixed by now. But there never was a fix listed. i think the info is good no mater how old it is. I just have to quit answering the old thread's. C-ya Scott
