: GM Perf. Parts high torque 383
Junkyard Dawg Mar 10th, 07, 6:29 PM Wondering if anyone has used/ran one, what kinds of times did you get out of it?
They say it makes 340 hp and 435 tq....not sure if that's good, bad or what it could do in the 1/4 mile....
pdq67 Mar 10th, 07, 9:02 PM Is this the GM long stroked truck 383??
The one w/ the 3.8" stroke??

It should be... My buddy just put one in his 98 Silverado... Haven't run it at the track yet, put it feels real strong down low...
Junkyard Dawg Mar 14th, 07, 12:39 AM Cool....anyone else have any input?
Oh and as for your question, I don't think it's listed as the truck one, though it may be, it's the 340 hp/435 tq one.....
67RS502 Mar 14th, 07, 8:40 AM any motor that doesnt make 1hp / cubic inch is pretty sad...
mild/decent 383 should make 450hp/500tq or more

I agree...and could be built a heck of a lot cheaper than that crate motor. :(

I think to make a 383 push 450 hp you need some cam in it. The GMPP 383 has a very mild cam in it. I think it's geared more for torque and highway gear usage as opposed to wide ass open throttle high rpm stuff that most are accustomed to.........

naaaaaa, my 383 made 490hp/495tq with a weenie 224/224 hyd. roller on a 114LS and has almost a smooth idle, with the 200-4R trans I can cruise 30mph at 1100-1200rpm down the road in OD.
your much better off building your own engine then buying something that not gonna make much power.
fabio Mar 14th, 07, 1:11 PM hot rod did a buildup of one those engines and got about 500 ft LBs. of torque. All they really did was throw a cam in it and rockers. But you could build yourself a 383 for cheap. The scat 9000 crank is only $230 and is a stout piece that is pretty light. Howards has some rebuilt rods with arp for around $125. It can be done cheaper and last.
Junkyard Dawg Mar 14th, 07, 1:11 PM I don't necessarly consider a 224/224 cam a "weenie" cam, though nothing real big either.....
A weenie cam would be like the 196/206 cam....
How much did you pay to build/have built your 383? Did you get any kind of warranty?
Perhaps GMPP "under rates" their engines?
67RS502 Mar 14th, 07, 5:41 PM 224/224 on a 114Ls that sounds like smooth idle IS a weenie cam, heck Jim (HotRod540) thinks the cam in my 67 is a weenie cam and its 252/263:D
I've got about 5K in my 383 and thats with doing a bunch of stuff myself.
Georgia69 Mar 15th, 07, 2:16 PM The crate motor comes with some nice stuff...a NEW 4-bolt block, NEW forged crank, PM rods, decent heads, roller cam, roller lifters, etc. Price all that stuff out, add in machine work, and think you'll spend at least 5 grand to build a comparable engine. Plus you get a nice warranty. The only thing disappointing in that engine (and the reason I decided against buying one) is the pistons.
Junkyard Dawg Mar 16th, 07, 10:15 AM I was kind of thinking the same thing.....obviously it can be cheaper....if you use old used parts with an unknown history/cycles on them. This is all brand new stuff we're talking here.
My main reasoning for looking into a crate is because it was for a daily driver as well as the warranty. Plus it seems a new engine would be more reliable than an old one with an unknown past fitted with new parts.
What's that old saying....new parts in a junk engine = a junk engine?
If this were for a weekend hot rod I'd actually opt for something custom built.
stewdog Mar 16th, 07, 10:35 AM Has anyone tried this guy out? He is comparing his motor to the GM.

Freiburger Mar 16th, 07, 11:16 AM The engine you're thinking of is the HT383, PN 12499101, which sells for $4189 at Scoggin-Dickey. The short-block is PN 12499106 for $3368. It has 9.1:1 compression and Vortec heads. I just put one in my '72 Carryall. The stock 196/206 cam is too tiny; the thing idles at 700 rpm and 20-21 inches of vacuum. It will run on dog water for gas. It pulls really hard right off idle but wheezes a bit at the top end. I'd put a 224ish cam in the thing if I had it out again. Other than that and the hyper pistons I think it's a good deal for a quiet daily driver.

Junkyard Dawg Mar 16th, 07, 7:03 PM Even if you ran it with a TH350, a stock converter and a 2.41-3.08 rear?
I'll bet the torque does wonders for something geared between 2.41 and 3.08 with a stock converter.
