Chevysrit,
I only live a few blocks from Woodward so I go every year. I've got thousands of incredibly cool pictures from over the years of all kinds of cool cars and weird stuff. It's definitely an amazing blast, but I feel sorry for the out-of-town people who don't really know the good places to go to, or park, or things to do.
The hub of the cruise is definitely 13 mile and Wooward. This is a picture from near where I live at 13-1/2 mile and Woodward. And this is an uncrowded area.

And yes, you absolutely should come for a week beforehand. The actual cruising is much better the days before the cruise than the day of the cruise. There are also many great non-Woodward car shows, cruises and events around the area, and getting here a week (or two) gives you a chance to do some of it.
I think it would be a great idea for TC to have an area. There are plenty of areas for rent that are right near 13 mile. The prices vary greatly depending on the location. I also know of alot of spots where there are parking lots that nobody parks in because out-of-towners don't know they're there and they're free. I don't know how many TC'ers are coming but it would be cool to meet the people behind the words.

Here's another picture I like. This girl is out there every year with a different sign that just gets better and better.

Hope to see everybody in August.

I have gone every year. I take the week before off work. The week before is better cruising than saturday. Pontiac is the best place to see burnout action. The police are very strict in other areas. Birmingham & Royal Oak are good places to cruise.

I went in 2005 and it was by far the largest, most impressive, collection of automotive EVERYTHING that I've ever seen. Words can not describe it, it's an experience.

That sounds like a great idea, I went last year which was my first time there. Saturday was ok, friday night was awsome. As Mikerm said you need to go through pontiac cool burnouts. I had a monte behind me that chirpped his tires in birmingham that received a ticket.

I go every year. There is also a car show at the GM Technical center that is very impressive also. I think its at the beginning of the week. Big Deal Big fun and tons of cars. I am shooting to have the 68 ready for it. I would love to see a group of TCers show. I work at the Tech center in the powertrains building so can help all with setup and can maybe get a TC area setup if enough want to. let me know guys.

I usually go every year. But lately the cops have been out of control.
The police were handing out tickets for J walking, your walking through a big parking lot!!!! They were also going around looking in your cup to determine if you were drinking beer.

Yes it is fun but my only complaints are the people driving there classic minivan and organizations like this who complain about the cruise http://www.controlthecruise.com/ That website complains about loss of business(non food related maybe??) yet I am sure they are happy to rent out there parking spots for a couple hundred dollars.

Michigan economy sucks right now and think of how many out of towner come in the week of the dream cruise.

YES, getting everybody together is a great idea. And I think Whiskey has a great idea also. Maybe we can get an area at the tech center where we can meet.
As for cruising my Chevelle, I hope to. Last year it wasn't together so I cruised in my friends' cars. But this year, it should be mobile enough to cruise in. I don't care what it looks like, just as long as it moves.
Yeah, I don't know why the pictures aren't working. I'll keep trying. Maybe
i'll have to super-shrink them and put them in my showroom and try that.

Well you gotta be careful, people put down water and bleach in from of their area, if your careful, you can hit it a bit and make em happy

Except for the trailer queens that are afraid to scratch the tires :)

I've been there every year but the first and it's a definite blast. I won't be going to the actual cruise this year though. It's grown to the point where Woodward turns into a 15 mile long parking lot on Saturday with cops everywhere looking to generate revenue at every opportunity. The week before is the definitely the time to cruise. Nothing is organized and the communities can't afford the OT to maintain the ridiculous level of police presence you see during the official cruise.

It’s definitely a worthwhile event to experience. Particularly the area around the Northwood shopping center at 13 mile and Woodward. If you hangout there throughout the week you'll see more cars than you've seen your entire life.

my advise is to leave the blower motor and high stall at home on the official day. After high noon..every SUV and soccer mom mini van gridlock the cruise.I got stuck behind an ice cream truck in the the curb lane drumming up business.

That sucks, they were supposed to keep the regular cars OUT of the right lane, so the people could see the classics, not the diamler execs in a new viper

I was told that Woodward is a thrufare and the communitys can not dictate lanes. You would think though that common sense prevails...but I have yet to see it.On the bright side..there is a lady south of Maple that orders the gawkers out of the cruise lane and welcomes in your classic.I also love the poster board crowd that displays We are not interested in your new car daily driver..move over for Detroit Iron.So not all is lost.:hurray:

I am DONE with the cruise on Saturday!! I live on the west side 10 miles from Woodward. Last year it rained on/off all day Saturday, so not too good a turn out for the cars being driven. Still lots of cars parked on the shoulders, more than 5,000 muscle cars of ALL kinds. I friend called me at 5:00 pm and said he had just gotten off, and the traffic was good. It took me a half hour to saddle up and get over there. I got on Woodward at 8 mile and the cars were already at a STAND-STILL!! I drove north 15 miles to Pontiac, and it only took me 2 FRIGGIN' HOURS!! The mommy vans were out in force clogging up the cruisers. I will only go out the week nights before, and even then, the police are all over the guys for anything! They have a new ticket called "demonstration of speed" that they write as a revenue enhancement. If you stand on it just a little, NEVER spin a tire and NEVER exceed the speed limit, they still write you you up. I've heard that it's $150!!! The best way is to park, walk Woodward as far as you can, looking at all the cars parked, cross over and walk back. Woodward and 13 mile is a sea of parked cars, like they say. I will not go out anymore on Saturday because it's just too hard, so look for me earlier in the week. I drive a '65 Pro-Street Chevelle, light yellow, BBC with a 6-71 blower. Lots of fun on the street, really gets the kids excited when they hear the gear whine coming down the street. See you out there!

Are the car museums worth looking ito? I know there is a couple "BRAND X" car museums or plants that give tours. Has Anyone gone to those? I'm going to try and make it a weeks worth of car things for the week. Whats worth seeing in the area. I'm from NJ and want to get a group of guys together for the cruise and other car related side trips since I've never been there before. Thanks for your input!!!

Heck, if the traffic is that bad. Exhibition of speed is almost impossible from the sounds of it.

The cruise is a blast. I spend a week before the cruise and a week after the cruise actually cruising. But I know going into saturday that the traffic on Woodward is going to be packed. But sitting in traffic talking to the people in the other cars and the people in the crowds is awesome. I can see how someone that's not familiar with the area would be discouraged by the traffic. So my best advice is to buy a residential street level map of the cities you'll be cruising in, because anywhere on Wooward you can get around the traffic by going a couple residential streets in off Woodward where there's very little traffic.
It's definitely a great time.......unless you've got a trailer queen that can't handle the heat. I think I've got a few hundred pictures of trailer queens sitting beside the road puking various fluids and parts. I love it. LOL.

The cruise goes through many Michigan towns by what I've read. How close is it to the main attractions in Detroit such as car museums, assembly line tours, GM tech center, the "BRAND X" museum and the place where they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 57 Chevy.
I'm from NJ and I am planning to spend the week in the area.
If anyone is familiar or can offer input it's much appreciated.
Thanks guys!!

another up and coming cruise is the 28th street Metro cruise in Grand Rapids. They are expecting 10,000 cars and 200,000 vistors, I have been there last two years and it is great. The cops are really good, they just kind of turn there head so far. Go to their web site ---28th metro cruise

Any real good hotels anyone can recommend??? Thanks guys!

Yep,
The Travelodge at 13 mile and Woodward is right in the thick of things. It's an okay hotel, nothing special, but if you want to be right on Woodward this is it.
http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=dspv&flag=l&itid=&itdx=&itty=&from=f&foop=0&hwrq=&htid=890780&spsh=&spsi=&crti=4&nfla=1&mdpcid=21187-1.ExpediaHotelImagesUS|+Hotel_Review|+freesearch|+ US&&zz=1180810838312&

Another is the Kingsley Inn on Woodward a few miles up the road. It's a nice place.
http://www.michigan.org/travel/detail.asp?m=6;4&p=g5587

Another nice hotel is the Marriott of Troy. It's a few miles away from Wooward but it's a nice place with nice amenities. This is where I would stay if I were coming into town for the cruise.
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/dtttt-detroit-marriott-troy/

Or if you want all out, go to the Townsend in Birmingham. It's right near 15 mile and Woodward and is a primo hotel but you better have your uranium card handy for that one.
http://www.townsendhotel.com/

There are definitely other good hotels in the area, but these are a few off the top of my head with a good distance/quality factor.

It's great to hear you're coming into town. We'll definitely have to set something up to get the TCers together. It would be awesome to meet the great guys on this forum, (even if we don't always agree).:)
If anybody has any more questions feel free to ask because I've lived in this area all my life, and there are plenty of things to do and places to go to that aren't in the official cruise info pamphlet.
Most of the action is near 13 mile and Woodward, with some good events also happening in other spots like Ferndale and Pontiac (about 4 miles south and 10 miles north respectively).
It's good you asked about hotels because they're are some really nice ones around here, but there are also alot of really crappy ones that look okay on the net. Whatever you do, be careful about your hotel!!!! There are quite a few "short stay" motels on Woodward.
It's getting close. :) Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll have my car together in time. If I can get the other quarter on, (i'm a super-novice at body work), I'll spray the car up with a few cans of Home Depot primer and roll onto Woodward. Otherwise I'll be cruising in one of my friends cars.
Or maybe we can all get together and I'll roll out in a TCers car.
:beers:
