I've heard mixed comments about vinyl tops, from "I love them!" to "What the hell do you want to put one of those rust magnets on for!?" annoying and expensive rust is not one of their highlights ,but what about this? Im going to put a black vinyl top on my 68 SS Chevelle and i was thinking about using Por15 on the roof and under the top,do ya'll think it would prevent the rust? I want a vinyl top but like everyone else, i dont want the rust and problems. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gifLet Me Know

I've used por-15 on frames, wheel wells, floors, ect. Just my opinion, but I think it's the best rust preventitive ever invented. Use it under a vinyl top ? Why not.

Alot of people don't even put paint on the roof & pillars if they know a vinyl top is going on. I think that's the main reason vinyl gets a bad rap. POR-15 makes sense to me. It limits the moisture as a barrier, where paint, dosen't. I've loaded up 3-4 coats of urethane under vinyl before and so far so good. If you use POR -15, make sure you start with bare, clean metal. If you apply it over primer, bondo or paint, it lifts easy. I've seen it happen. Another trick for limiting moisture is to load up on the glue on the material of the top itself. especially around the rear window. Also be carefull when trimming the vinyl. I've seen razor knife cuts thru the paint right under the 1/4 panel trim piece allowing rust to instantly form and bubble the whole area around it. Then when you're done and the trim is installed, put a bead of silicone clear caulk around the trim on the back glass to fill the void between glass and window trim. This will prevent water from going down under the trim where it is trapped and does it's damage. That whole back glass ledge should be POR-15'd as well in my opinion. Go for it!
