The "Body by Fisher" Service manual says you should take the door off while it's shut. That's fine, but my question is how do you get the door spring out without any special "tool" or killing yourself? This is all I lack in having the entire car disassembled. Any "easy" ideas out there?

The door springs are easly popped out with a prybar, I haven't been injured by any. If you're worried wire them tokeep them from flying too far :D

badbob71 - do you do it with the door open? I guess you'd have to - right?

yes, then close the door if you need to remove it in the closed postion, I almost always remove the door in the open position with help when needed, or you can do it in the closed postion and remove the bolts attaching the hinges to the body. Sometimes I drill 1/8th inch alignment holes through the hinge and body before removal to help installation/alignment.

Then how do you get the springs back in when your ready to put the door back on?

for about $10 your auto parts store will sell you a spring compresser designed to do this, years ago I used to squeeze the spring in a vise and wire it through the spring to keep it in it's compressed state then with pliers hold it in the hinge and cut the wire to let it go, it works in a pinch when you don't have the compressor.
