1970 Chevelle SS - Does anyone know what the panel that the back seat attaches too is called? Does anyone make a replacement panel? It’s fairly straight foreword and would not be that hard to mock up a new one from some 18 gauge cold rolled flat stock. I’m just trying to save some time.

Also does anyone know what the tar paper stuff under the carpet is called? Is dynamat or a similar product a suitable replacement?

Thanks, Darren

Don't get discouraged! I have been looking for a reference to that part for you. I only have a parts list that covers '64 - '69 models. That part doesn't exist on 64/65 models; for 66/67 there is only a diagonal seat back brace and the part number is given as N.L. (Not Listed). Referring to my 1967 Fisher Body Manual I see convertibles have a short version of your panel called the ‘Seat Back Support Panel’. For 68/69 (and beyond I believe) the panel in question is all part of the floor pan stamping and not reference in the parts book. I believe it may be referred to as an anti-intrusion bulkhead or barrier; or possibly it may be called a ‘Seat Back Support Panel’. It was probably added by law (or GM lawyers ;) )to prevent loose items in the trunk from potentially piercing the seatback in the event of a collision.
This is not a panel that is subject to major rust or collision damage, so there would be no demand for the aftermarket to offer a repro. Your best bet is to find a donor GM A-body intermediate, preferably the same model year as there may be subtle differences in it. I would suggest going with a closed body style, coupe or sedan, or possibly even a Monte Carlo. Convertibles may have differences in order to clear stuff like hydraulic pumps & the top well.
Hey, I’m not an expert but I’m trying to help you out. Happy hunting!

I forgot to mention that the stuff that goes under the carpet is simply called 'carpet underlay'. I believe a company by the name of 'Snake Oyl' sells reproduction underlay. You could also improvise and use the Dynamat sound deadener (there was a thread here maybe a week or so ago on the subject of sound deadener, so try a search).

Darren,
Here is a link for the carpet underlay Tar paper.

I can not help on your other question about the panel. I do not believe that I have seen any for sale. If nothing else look in a dry climate area and have a junk yard cut one out for you. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all your effort. I need to get a hold of some of those manuals. I knew this was the right place to go…. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

And for anyone thats following along just let me add …. DO IT ONCE AND DO IT RIGHT, even if it takes twice or 3 times as long. I have spent the last 6 months fixing someone else’s hack job…... It will be worth it in the end!!

Seems like this part should be available from a scrap yard: 68-72 should intechange from any A-body. To me, it might be a lot easier than fabbing one.
