Yes, I know same old question. I know all about the one week window but what would be a better bond, go to bare metal DX1790 wash primmer and epoxy with filler over them and topcoated with K-38 inside of a week
Or should I go to bare metal do the filler work then the wash primer, epoxy, followed by the Surfacer?
TIA, Zach

Hey Zach, I prefer the filler over epoxy method, It is a slow process though being that the epoxy has to reach full cure which is dependant on alot of variables. I give the epoxy a good rub with a red scotchbrite to provide an open surface for the filler to bite and actually crosslink alittle. Polyester fillers do have some strong solvents and should never be used over etch primers. Most people are very happy with results obtained by applying the polyester over bare metal without the epoxy but I've monitored repairs made with the epoxy first and they do hold up better.

Zach, for slow workers Id go with the filler over epoxy route. If you went the bare metal route you could leave that metal exposed for longer periods of time then it should be exposed.
It just allows you to work at YOUR pace. Ive been metal working a 38 farmall hood for the past month now, some days I might touch it for maybe 1hr others I just look at it then shut off the lights smile.gif
My first epoxy/filler project was my SS455, got the body work done in fall of 1999. Got a 45 John Deere B that been done sice mid 2000 and other small little project here and there. Ive YET to see any type of failure what so ever.
My ALMOST daily driver Ford Ranger I did in spring of 01 has epoxy/filler on the door and fender, no failures. Doing a 38 Farmall that will get the epoxy/filler route.
What Ive done in the past and will continue to do is first apply 1coat of etch primer(PPG DX1791) then epoxy(DPLF90) scuff with 180 grit then apply filler.
Baddbob has mentioned a EPX900 epoxy from what I hear from my rep its a better product then the DPLF epoxies. Ill use up my remaining DPLF and try out that epx900.
Thanks for the heads up on the EPX Bob graemlins/thumbsup.gif
