: front fender skirts: plastic not metal
jtjohnston Sep 7th, 02, 7:21 PM My inside front fender skirts are plastic, not metal. My car is all original, built in Oshawa. Does anyone know anything about this? The clip has never been changed! Why are the chevelles I have seen all metal? What makes me so special? I have heard Buicks had plastic?

deejay Sep 7th, 02, 8:51 PM This has been brought up here several times. Some cars, as my 72, had one of each. Some had both plastic, and some both steel. G.M. used whatever ones(for right or left), that were most available at the time of production.
MalibuJerry350 Sep 7th, 02, 9:31 PM Both mine and my wife's 70 Chevelles came with plastic inner fenders from the factory. Hers was built in Baltimore in February and mine was built the third week of June in Arlington. She bought hers "off the lot" and I ordered mine a month later in May of 1970. When I replaced my inner fenders in the late 70's because of stress cracks around the bolt holes, the ones I got from the Chevy dealer were metal. One more interesting note. On my wife's 70 Malibu, the plastic inner fenders were stamped "Made in Canada". As I said, the car was built in Baltimore.

rollin_92gt Sep 7th, 02, 10:41 PM I am trying to polish my rear bumper, in the living room no less (my wife is wonderful) and i'm wondering if there is something i can use or do to get the pits out of the bumper. I'm currently using some rubbing compound and it's working to bring out the shine, but the small pits are in there and I'm thinking of breaking out the drill and buffer pads, any suggestions? thanks
jtjohnston Sep 9th, 02, 12:16 AM I've seen nothing but metal in these parts up here in Canadaa eh http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks. I'd love to know more, if anyone has any theories.

crossy Sep 10th, 02, 10:15 PM sorry to say but your not going to get the pits out. they are already below the chrome. DAVE
Neal Wright Sep 11th, 02, 12:28 PM The only one I've seen a definite on, is that Olds 442's came with red plastic ones. All other A-body are a hodge-podge ... although I've never seen a car original with one of each.
Steve S Sep 11th, 02, 1:02 PM The reason you see more metal ones is that the plastic ones were cracked and were rplaced with metal ones. My 70 came with plastic but I changed them out because they had serious cracks.

Professor_SS Sep 11th, 02, 2:50 PM both of my cars are canadian built cars and both have plastic inners. The 72s were crack badly and I replaced them with repops but my 70 has one with a very small crack and the other is perfect. I'll bet some restorer has gone crazy trying to find a perfect set of plastic inners with the canadian stamping on them since the repops don't have any stamping on them.

jtjohnston Sep 12th, 02, 1:39 AM You know, this thread is getting more and more interesting. Been on the go for a week or so? Not that anyone has the same story, but for fun, I'd like to hear more.
Mine has plastic, which seemed real weird for 1971. I guess not. Everyone has a different story though. What does GM have to say. If someone has an inside, I'd love to hear more.
Thanks. At least I can still say with certainty that my car had not been crashed and bashed and fixed with plastic replicas, without my knowing it.

mrein Sep 12th, 02, 1:19 PM I have a 1972 Malibu. One metal, one plastic.
I have a 1971 Malibu convertable. One metal, one plastic.
I junked a 1971 Monte Carlo a year or two ago. One metal, one plastic.
To the best of my knowledge all cars have/had the original pieces in them.
Here is my theory. All three cars have plastic on the RHS, metal on the left. The factory did this to keep that side from rusting out from the battery.

Rusting out from the battery, or the feects of rust on the passenger side? In Newfoundland, for some reason, rocker panels will go faster on the passenger side than the driver's side.
An intersting point. Can anyone else confirm?

bigdb Sep 14th, 02, 2:38 PM My 70 has plastic on both sides..I am 100% sure it is original...
Neuman Jun 30th, 04, 11:07 AM My '69 SS has one of each. I always assumed that the plastic was a replacement. Is there a way to determine if it is original?
ronheb454 Jun 30th, 04, 12:21 PM My 71 Chevelle had plastic with the Made in Canada stamping. Recently replaced with metal.
jtjohnston Jul 1st, 04, 12:22 AM Well! smile.gif graemlins/clonk.gif That was posted two years ago smile.gif
The archives still work I see smile.gif
I have heard of, and seen all manner of combinations since. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why metal or plastic would be one one side or another, or why such and such a plant would send cars out with both, or either.
I have heard the plastic reproductions are hellish to fit.
